Her bottom lip trembles. “Oh, Dane. Why don’t you understand that you are special? I’ve waited so long for you to wake up and see me.”
“I do see you.”
She pushes lightly against my chest. “Why do you have to be such a jerk? I’m moving on. Do you hear me? Moving. On.”
She smashes her lips together and I know she’s going to cry.
And then I kiss her. Honestly, I’d do anything to make her stop.
Her initial response is as lukewarm as lake water in August. Her body stiffens and her hands push against my chest—but only for an instant. Then, she melts against me and her fingers curl around the lapel of my tux.
My lips press hard against hers. My hands are finally home on her sweet ass—and hell, she’s wearing a thong. I’m lost to my lust. Again.
I should know better. I shouldn’t be doing this. But putting my hands on her should prove how irresistible she is and it’s about all the logic I can muster.

“What are you talking about?”
His shoulders grow rigid, and he doesn’t turn around. “I don’t ever want to get married or have a family. Ever. And you deserve more than waiting around for me. I’ve never had a relationship that lasted more than a month. I know what you want out of life. A husband, kids, the whole nine yards. You get stuck with me, and it’s not going to happen.”
“You’re sure you won’t ever want anything more?”
“Not me. I’m one-hundred percent positive about this. I’m happy with the way things are and I don’t want the same things as you. I can’t care for any woman more than I care for you, but it’s not enough. You deserve more.”
I’m still staring at the back of his head when I fight back the tears. “Ok. Thanks for confiding in me.”
“So you understand?” Dane turns back to me and tucks both hands into his jeans. A wry corner of his mouth jacks up and his eyes plead with me. “We’re cool?”
“Dane.” I take one more sip of tea and breathe through my nostrils. “I’m pregnant.”

There are so many stories. So many characters. And it’s become constant. It’s a hive of other people’s feelings, other people’s emotions inside me. Murder and mayhem. Sex, love and romance. Beaches and holidays, wishes and dreams. I can’t even remember my own dreams anymore. Maybe I never had any, or maybe they’ve been realized and I missed them while I was writing everyone else’s happily ever afters. “What?

He made it feel that way with his hushed obscenities in my ear and his solid frame tugging me back into it. Blaine Jacobs, in those few minutes, made the abhorrent seem plausible. He made the vile seem enlightened, enjoyable even, and he did it with nothing but his satin like tone and his sense of ownership around me. He made the distasteful more believable than normality could ever be, with just his touch.

“Victoria.” A deep male voice made me look up to find a familiar face grinning back at me.

I’m sure he could tell I was blushing and on top of that, I laughed nervously, “Thanks, looks like they’re getting ready to take the group photo.” I said as I turned to leave when he just looked at me amused.
“Hey Victoria,” His hand is on my shoulder and a spark of something runs through my body.
What the hell was that?
“You forgot this.” He hands me back the lanyard that I somehow left behind.” His hand is still resting on my shoulder as I take it from him and his fingers brush against mine.
I acted as cool as I could but I probably failed, “Thank you Shane.” His name left my lips before I had a chance to think about it.
“You’re welcome Victoria.” He replied with emphasis on my name.
I could still feel his eyes on me as I leave my cup on my table and make way to take the group photo.

Finally I checked my phone as I walked out of the room and went through a few emails, messages and last but not least, the snap that Axel had sent me earlier.
“I want you.” I stopped dead in my tracks as I re-read the message over and over again.
He wants me.
OK, he’d never said that before. In fact, we’d kept the sexy talk about our bodies not about us actually meeting up and doing anything. I know that’s not what he said but it was implied.
“I want you too.” I replied back because two could play that game. Honestly, I thought he was just playing with me or messing with my head because he’d never committed to meeting me at a book signing. So could I really believe he would actually meet up with me for date or even just sex?
I walked towards the elevators and as I did, I got another snap from Axel.
“Soon.” It was all he said.
I didn’t reply back.

“Wow.” A voice that wasn’t Shane’s or mine said.
We barely paused looking over in a haze of lust and desire, my eyes widened but I had lost control of my body and only felt what Shane was doing to me.

Duncan sighed. “I know.”

He looked around, then let it flow into the candles standing ready in sconces along the wide front hallway. There was too much. His control had slipped, and he winced as he saw the two candles closest to him melt rapidly into puddles on the stone floor. Damn.
“Ermidge!”
The steward appeared from around the corner, somehow managing to appear as though he hadn’t been waiting there and listening to every word. “Yes, sir?”
“Have somebody clean that up, would you? And express my apologies in coin, please. I’m going down the hill.”
“To the cottage, sir?” Ermidge looked dubious, as well he should. Crossing a witch in a temper was generally a bad idea, particularly when you’d put her into it.
“Hell, no. I’m going to the inn.”

Prince Arthur:
When we reach the vault room, there are two guards standing at the door. Normally there is just one, sitting on the inside; but for nights like tonight, there are a total of six. I nod, and one of them opens the door.
“Good evening, fellows,” I say.
“Good evening, Your Highness.”
Once inside the room, we go through the same routine with the other four men. I go to the keypad and press the code, then hold my face in front of the camera for a retina scan. When I look down at Tessa, she actually looks impressed.
“A little Bond-esque, no?” I ask.
“Very.”
“Come on, Moneypenny, let’s get you something for that beautiful neck of yours.” I tug her hand and pull her in with me before she can say no.
She’s already shaking her head, but I hold up one finger. “I can see those Sharpe family brains of yours going to work on ten different reasons why you won’t borrow a necklace, but I have already prepared counterarguments, and since we are now twelve minutes behind schedule, please allow me. One, they’re already paid for, some of them hundreds of years ago, so it’s not coming out of anyone’s taxes. Two, like the books in the library, they’re going to waste in here. Three, for the first time in my life, I want to share something with someone else—someone who deserves to feel like a queen, even if she’ll only allow herself that for one measly little evening. Four, I have this fantasy of seeing you in only the jewels. Maybe the heels could stay.”
Tessa laughs and her cheeks go pink. “All right. One necklace, but make it a cheap one.”
I raise one eyebrow. “Define cheap.”
“Less than a kitchen stool.”
“How about less than a car?”
“Sofa.”
“I said ‘queen.’ Would a queen really wear a sofa around her neck?” I reach up and run my fingertips along the base of her neck.
“Would she wear a car?”
“Good point.” I lean down and kiss the crook of her neck. “How about this? You choose whichever one you like the best, and I won’t tell you how much it’s worth.”
I continue to brush my lips along her skin, then move up to her earlobe. The other night, I discovered a little spot at the base of her ear that turns her to putty. After a moment of some careful work, I get what I want. A breathy, little ‘okay’ escapes her lips.

Excerpt #2:
Tessa:
“I don’t find you attractive at all, really,” I say.
He stops his hand and raises one eyebrow in response.
I hide my smile with everything in me. “I only slept with you because I felt sorry for you.”
“Oh, so that was a—”
“A pity fuck, I’m afraid.” I try my best to look apologetic, but he’s clearly not buying it.
“Three times?”
“I felt really, really, really sorry for you.”

Excerpt #3:
Text Conversation between Prince Arthur and Tessa:
Arthur: Any chance you want a plus one for this mysterious family obligation?
Tessa: You would hate it. It’s a horridly loud birthday party for my very wild but adorable twin nephews, who are turning six.
Arthur: Will there be strippers?
Tessa: Not if you don’t count their three-year-old brother who hates to wear clothes.
Arthur: He definitely does not count.
Tessa: All I can promise is that there will be cheap store-bought cake with sickeningly sweet icing and beer.
Arthur: You had me at sickeningly sweet icing.
Tessa: Meet me at the front doors in fifteen?
Arthur: I’ll be there in ten.

MJ Summers currently resides in Edmonton, Canada, with her husband, three young children, and their goofy dog. When she’s not writing romance novels, she loves reading (obviously), snuggling up on the couch with her family for movie night (which would not be complete without lots of popcorn and milkshakes), and long walks in the woods near her house.
