Blurb:

Can broken promises ever be made whole again?

After her parents die in a car crash, four-year-old Nicole is raised by staunch grandparents, where toys are sparse and love even sparser. But when the boy next door sticks his head through the hedge to say hello, Nicole learns that life is more than just routine, and as the years go by, they form a bond of love that nothing can break.

Will wants nothing more than to be with Nicole forever. But when he finds himself faced with a difficult decision and sees no other option, he must break his promise of forever to the woman he loves in order to be the man he can forgive.

With time unable to heal unseen wounds, do Nicole and Will have a second chance to make good on their promise of forever?

“Liz Scott’s stories are filled with gentle humor and an exquisite, endearing romance. It’s quite easy to get lost in You Promised Me Forever and forget to come up for air.”—USA Today bestselling author Elizabeth Lennox

Read An Excerpt…

Nicole counted her steps. Each morning she was required to take in the morning air while strengthening her constitution by walking in the backyard. Two hundred steps down the hedge on the left, three hundred and sixty-seven steps across the back and two hundred and ten steps up the right-side hedge. Then she would turn around and begin her counting all over again until her grandmother called her in.

On the third lap she heard a rustling noise in the hedge. Then on her one hundred and fifteenth step, a head poked out of the hedge, stopping her in her tracks. A head with a mop of shaggy brown hair that kept falling in its owner’s eyes popped through. Nicole giggled as he tried to blow his hair away from his face, not even bothering to use a comb or to even run his fingers through it to keep it out of the way. His eyes were dancing with mischief and were so blue they gave her shivers.

“Hey. What’re you doing?”

Nicole eyed “her boy” from next door. “I’m taking my morning constitutional.” She’d never heard his voice and thought he sounded rather childish.

“Con-sti what?” The boy started to crawl out of the hedge, but Nicole stopped him by pushing on his shoulders with her hands.

“No, please…stay back. We have not been properly introduced, and my grandmother would not approve.” Nicole glanced anxiously towards the house, glad she didn’t see her grandparents at the windows. She knew it was wrong to speak with the boy, but she desired more than anything for just a few moments with him.

“You talk funny.” The boy looked her up and down. “And you dress funny too.”625c486ef30a8de4de206adadb250cae

Nicole ran her hands down her white cotton split-skirt and tunic, confused about why he thought her walking costume was humorous. Every inch of skin was covered except her hands and face. “I can assure you I speak the same as my grandmother and grandfather. Perhaps you are the one that speaks differently. And there is nothing wrong with my garments.”

“See, nobody I know says things like that. What’s your name, girl?”

Nicole again glanced toward the house, worrying her bottom lip between her teeth, a habit her grandmother detested. “I don’t know if it is proper to be on a first name basis with someone I just met.”

“I’m William Marcus Harrison, but everybody calls me Will. So, now we’ve been introduced, and you can tell me your name.”

“It is a pleasure to meet you, William.” Nicole offered her hand to William, paused, and then dropped it again when he appeared disinclined to shake her hand. “My name is Nicolette Mary-Margaret Montgomery.”

“That name’s a mouthful. How old are you, Nic?” William dropped to his knees and began digging in the dirt at the base of the hedge.

“Nicole,” she corrected, and cringed when his khaki shorts touched the ground, grinding dirt into the knees. “And it’s not polite to ask a lady her age, but I will tell you anyway, William. I’m eight years old.” Nicole was fascinated with his earnest digging. He seemed not to mind the dirt on his hands or under his fingernails. Grandmother would have one of her spells if Nicole came in with dirt on her hands.

Blurb:

Secrets. Redemption. Love’s second-chance.
Hard-driving real-estate developer Lauren Rolphe returns to her hometown of Looking Glass Lake, ready to revitalize the area and receive a hero’s welcome for her troubles.
Practical-joker Matthew Paycoach is the town’s most loyal and influential citizen…and the Looking Glass Lake’s most charming cowboy. But even his easy-going smile can’t mask the pain Lauren caused when she dumped him and left town without a goodbye nine years ago.
As they war over the town’s future, Looking Glass Lake’s most notorious matchmakers jump into the fray. Matt quickly loses the battle to protect his heart, and Lauren is overwhelmed by sweet memories and longings she has tried so desperately to forget.
But when a secret surfaces and the past comes back to haunt them, Matt and Lauren must learn how to let go and trust God…or lose love’s true home forever.
Love’s True Home is Book 1 in the Looking Glass Lake series of contemporary Christian romance.
If you like sweet and clean love stories with quirky characters that get you laughing, then you’ll love Rebecca Nightsong’s world of imperfect people who dare to put their faith and love in action.
Saddle up and enter cowboy country to start this sweet love story today!

Excerpt One…

“Don’t look so worried,” Matt said. “I’ve heard the mayor of this place is really quite reasonable.” He leaned forward, a teasing glint in his eye. “I’ve also heard he has quite the crush on you, so he might entertain a low offer. As long as it’s within reason, of course.”
Lauren couldn’t look at him. Today, she didn’t have it in her to flirt. And her foggy brain refused to give her the right words to tell him how bad it really was. But she had to try one more time. “The structural damage is a lot worse than I thought, too,” she said. “Which means the entire project might take a lot longer than anticipated.”
Matt laughed, and she looked up at him in surprise. “That’s the best news I’ve heard all day,” he said. “It means you’ll be in town longer.” He leaned down and kissed her, his lips lingering on hers.
Lauren gave up then, and reached her hands up around his neck, kissing him back. Kisses like that made her realize how badly she wanted to stay here. Kisses like that almost made her forget about the numbers and the balance sheets and the return on investment. Kisses like that pushed back the pain of so many losses and brought a whisper of hope. They made her vision blur and her heart beat faster, and then instead of seeing the world through numbers, she saw it through his eyes.
Through his eyes, this was a priceless historical building, with so much sentimental value to the town and the state. And to Matt. Maybe even to her, just because it mattered to Matt and Looking Glass Lake so much. Which meant that those kisses must really be messing with her heart. And maybe her head.
Because between head and heart, she wasn’t sure anymore which direction she was headed.loves-true-home-christian-romance

Excerpt Two…

“What I have a problem with,” Lauren spat, “is you taking advantage of your star power to control a whole town. They can’t even think for themselves. They’re too busy falling all over you.”
Thwap. Matt sunk a nail into the wood with his nail gun before he turned and looked at her. “Maybe that’s why you left town nine years ago.”
“This isn’t about me leaving. And anyway, that makes no sense.”
He came down the ladder and laid his nail gun on the granite counter top. He stepped entirely too close to her. Golden flecks in his navy eyes sent a zing up her spine, and the fresh cedar of his aftershave throttled her heart rate. She took a shaky breath.
“Let me clarify, then,” he said, his voice low. “Maybe you left because you were afraid you were falling for me.”
She laughed. “Falling for you?” Whew. Just when she thought those memories would sweep her back up in their arms, he said something like that. Something that slapped her upside the head with reality. “Matthew Paycoach, you made certain a long time ago that I would never fall for you again, not in a million years.”
His teeth gleamed in a wicked smile. “I can still get you riled up.”
She smoothed her skirt and sniffed. “Stupidity gets me riled up.”
He laughed. “You sure look pretty when you’re mad,” he said. He reached out and touched her chin, turning her face up gently. “And that lipstick color is very….” His lips curled into an amused smile. “Very noticeable.”
She scowled, and her hands flew to burning cheeks. She’d forgotten about the makeup. She was serious, and he treated her like a joke. The whole town had treated her like a joke. All along, she’d been the fool. Well, that was about to change. “I didn’t come here to talk about the past.” She jerked her face away and swung her briefcase onto the counter.
“Then you’d better change your plans.” Matt planted his feet wide apart and rested his thumbs on his tool belt.
“Or what? You’ll pull your nail gun, and we’ll have a shootout at the OK Corral?” She snapped her briefcase open and pulled out a file. She tapped the corner of the file against his chest. “Look, Matt. This isn’t personal. It’s business. Enough with the practical jokes. Why can’t you put resentments aside and get down to business? Looking Glass Lake needs me, whether you admit it or not. And the Glass Slipper Resort is the only thing that will save this town. And the only thing that will save the Glass Slipper Resort is my boss and his plans to renovate.”
She spread the specs out on the counter, but he didn’t even glance at them.
He folded his arms, and they engaged in a stare down. She knew the good, the bad, and the ugly about this man. Even a lonely Native flute call and a tumbleweed blowing through on a dry wind wouldn’t shake her focus. He was going down. She tapped her fingers against the counter top. Make your move, cowboy.

A modern re-telling of Jane Eyre that will leave you breathless…
Jack England
Eden Rochester is a force. A whirlwind of intensity and thinly-veiled passion. Over the past few years, I’ve worked hard to avoid my passions, to lock them up so they can’t harm me—or anyone else—again. But Eden Rochester ignites every emotion I have. Every glance from her sharp eyes and each teasing word from her indulgent lips adds more fuel to the fire. Resisting her? Impossible. From the moment I held her in my arms, I had to have her. But tempting her into opening up could cost me my job and much, much more.

Eden Rochester
When Jack England crosses my path and knocks me off my high horse, something begins to shift. Imperceptible at first, the change grows each time he looks into my eyes or brushes against my skin. He’s my assistant, but everything about him calls to me, tempts me. And once I give in, he shows me who he really is—dominant, passionate, and with a dark past. After long days of work and several hot nights, I realize the two of us are bound together. But my secrets won’t stay buried, and they cut like a knife.

Stand-alone.

Tempting Eden final ebook.jpg

She took a small step toward me, invading my space. I looked down into her green eyes, giving her stare right back to her until she blinked. Something more than air existed in the space between us. I wanted to grab her waist, to link myself to her somehow. I wanted to claim her, to show her which one of us was truly in charge.

I maintained my stance.

“Do I make you uncomfortable?” she asked.

“Not even a little bit.”

She had no idea. The things I could do to her. The things I’d already done to her in my mind while I lay awake in the apartment behind Ms. Temple’s house every night. It wasn’t some ridiculous fantasy where the secretary bangs the boss. It was her. Something about her that I couldn’t quite define, but that I wanted, all the same.

“Does the way I do business bother you? The way I speak to you?”

I shook my head. “This is a job. You pay me to assist you. I’ll do that in any way I can.”

She cocked her head to the side. “You think this conversation is between a boss and her subordinate?”

I wasn’t sure what she meant. My face must have reflected my confusion.

She dropped her arms before reaching up and smoothing a few stray strands from her face. “I realize I pay you, that you work for me. But ever since that first day, when you won the business from Poole, I haven’t seen you as a subordinate. Can I teach you things? Yes. Do I have more experience? Yes. But you have certain intangibles, things I haven’t seen in any of the others in your position. Don’t sell yourself short.”
She couldn’t have surprised me more if she’d backhanded me and spit in my face. Actually, that would have been easier for me to process. This way of hers, the ability to put me at ease while simultaneously stunning me, made me wonder if she was gaming me somehow. But her frank gaze said differently. The truth was there in her eyes.

She reached past me and hit the button to open the doors. “Let’s get some lunch.”

He’ll show her how a real man treats a woman…

SABINE

I’ve never known how good it could feel to be taken care of by a man who knew what he was doing.

Until I was with Hugo…

HUGO

I was older than her.

She was innocent, hadn’t experienced all that life had to offer.

I could give her that experience.

Sabine consumed my thoughts, made me desire nothing else but her. No other woman compared to her, and because of that, I haven’t been with a woman for four years, which was also the last time I saw Sabine.

But I was done feeling guilty for what I desired. I wanted Sabine in my life, by my side, and I was about to make that a reality.

I didn’t know if she’d ever been treated the way a female should … but I was going to show her how a real man takes care of a woman.

Warning: If you’re into super short, hot, dirty reads containing a much older hero and younger heroine … keep on reading. This story is guaranteed to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, give you that sweet HEA we all deserve, and make you want to search out an experienced older man for yourself.

Let me see you, Sabine.”

My pulse jackknifed, and I felt my throat tighten. I looked down at myself, knowing I wanted to show him, because I thought I looked nice in the dress, but I felt so nervous. I’d never felt so … pretty.

“Sabine.” He said my name deeply, with a touch of authority.

I reached out and grabbed the handle and, for a second, just held the little brass globe in my hand. It started to warm when I finally pulled the door open. Hugo stood just a few feet from me, this air of confidence and control surrounding him.

He looked so damn good.

I felt my cheeks heat even further, but prayed I didn’t look like a total twit. I didn’t want him thinking I was embarrassed by this moment or his generosity. I also didn’t want him to think I couldn’t control myself and the clear attraction I’d felt between us in the car.

And God, had I felt it. I still couldn’t wrap my head around the heat that had consumed me at the way he’d looked at me. He didn’t speak for long seconds, but he was definitely appraising me.

“It’s too much, isn’t it?” I felt my hands start to shake from my nerves. I was losing it, but I couldn’t stop the energy moving through me.
“Krasivitsa.”

I felt butterflies take root in my belly at the way he called me beautiful. It was only one word, but it sounded like he meant so much more with it.

“You’re absolutely beautiful, Sabine.”

I felt my damn blush intensify. “Thank you.” I saw the woman holding up a few more dresses, but Hugo waved her off.

“I love this one. I think this one will be perfect for tonight.” He looked up at me after scanning my body for several seconds. I liked that he took charge. I loved this dress, but hearing him shut any other dresses down, and telling me this was the one, made me feel very feminine … very happy that he was pleased.

We didn’t speak for long seconds, and I wondered if the woman still standing in the background felt weird just watching us. Surely she could see the connection that was going on? Or maybe I was the only one that felt it?

“We need some privacy,” Hugo finally said, addressing the woman. She was gone a second later. I ran my hands down the dress, but caught myself and curled my fingers into fists. Hugo took a step closer and another and another, until he was right in front of me, just a few inches separating us.

I had a hard time breathing with Hugo’s scent filling my head. He glanced down at my lips, licked his own, and exhaled roughly, as if he was having just as hard a time as I was.

“There are a lot of things I want to say right now, Sabine.” He still stared at my mouth.

“Say them,” I whispered, not caring if anyone could hear us.

“They aren’t proper,” he said and took another step closer to me, so much so that if I inhaled our chests would brush together.

“I’m past proper, Hugo.” I was feeling bold, braver. “I know what happened in the car wasn’t just one sided.”

He was still looking at my mouth. My heartbeat filled my head, and I grew dizzy.

“No, it wasn’t just one sided.”

And then he leaned in, pushed my hair aside, and said softly against the shell of my ear, “It’s always been you, and I’m tried of waiting, Sabine. I’m ready to make you mine.”

Meet Jake Danes of Hudson River, Lone Wolf, avid gamer, extreme sports enthusiast, and surfer.  He’s spent the last two years roaming free, exploring the world and escaping the dark place his pack had become after betrayal and murder tore them apart.  Sure life has changed at home, but Jake’s having way too much fun to return.  Riding the waves in Monterrey, and living out of a van…it’s the prefect life, one he never wants to give up no matter how many calls he’s fielding from his big brother…then he catches her scent.

Mimi Chase wanted one perfect year.  One year away from pack politics and her mother’s matchmaking efforts.  Ever since her big brother settled into mating with a healer, Mimi’s mom seems to have gone into overtime in throwing her at every eligible male in the pack.  Choosing to roam seemed the best option, and California an ideal location to get away from everything pack related.  Her plans for art classes, yoga on the beach, maybe a cooking lesson or two while living a hippy dippy lifestyle are all she cares about…until another worlf butts into her every activity – doesn’t he know the rules?

Lone Wolves aren’t supposed to form relationships, so why doesn’t he catch a hint?  Worse, why isn’t she working harder to make sure he does?

Read an Excerpt from WOLF ON BOARD

Mimi grabbed a blanket and her yoga mat from the back of her Mini Cooper. She loved the tiny little vehicle. No matter how often her brother scoffed at the minute size of the car, she didn’t care. It was perfect for her. Compact, like she was, and capable of great speeds—just like her. Locking it up, she glanced east at the rising sun and smiled. It was a little after six in the morning and she’d already had a bit of a run, a lovely cup of hot tea with lemon and ginger to cleanse her system, and she would enjoy the full sunrise and rolling surf with her yoga.

Pausing, she took a deep breath of the salt flavored air. She loved the way the beach smelled. Warm sand. Cool water. Brine. Fish. Birds. Even the coconut oil favored by some of the sunbathers and honest sweat from those running on the paths—they all combined to soothe her soul. Tucking the rolled blanket and yoga mat beneath her arm, she closed the hatch on the car and pivoted to walk toward the beach.

A hint of wolf on the breeze had her pausing to scan the area. Other than a handful of vehicles in the lot, and a couple of runners jogging farther away, she didn’t see anyone. Still, she tested the scent once more. It was faint, as though diluted by the breeze and time. She tracked it all the way to a dilapidated Volkswagen van. It reminded her of the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo without the paint job.

The scent of wolf grew stronger. The van had to belong to whomever the wolf was, but the lack of fresh markers told her while his scent lingered, he wasn’t present. Adjusting her grip on the rolled blanket and mat, she circled away from the van and continued toward the beach all the while reminding herself that other Lone Wolves may choose to wander California for the same reason she did. No one claimed the beautiful state…well at least not this far north. The closest pack to her location was Sutter Butte, but she’d never heard any word of them taking an interest in the beaches.

Then again, she didn’t talk to a lot of people about the political geography of packs. If it’s all the same, I’d prefer not to encounter any of them. They have a bad rap and I’m on a journey of serenity, and self-discovery…and totally avoiding Mother’s matchmaking. The little voice at the end sounded way too much like her brother Owen’s, and she giggled. Owen, at least, had been sympathetic to her cause when she’d told him and Mason why she wanted to take the time to study in the Golden State.

Her mother’s habit of making pro and con lists for all of the pack’s current eligible bachelors had been bad enough, but when she’d talked to Gillian about potential mates in Hudson River and began colluding with Claudia Buckley about Delta Crescent, Mimi wanted out.

It was so bad, she’d actually asked Owen to get Gillian pregnant just to distract their mother. The silence on his end of the phone had been priceless, followed by peals of laughter from Gillian. Fortunately, her desperation had communicated itself well enough and he’d endorsed her request. Mason made her promise to return at the end of one year, even if she was enjoying herself, and she would be free to return to her studies after, if that was her desire.

Mason is the bomb. She hopped over the rocks to land on the sand and began to stroll in search of a spot that would speak to her. Not only had her alpha understood her dilemma and sympathized with it, he didn’t chastise her for the need to stretch herself beyond the confines of pack and parental expectation. Mimi’s skills for tracking had earned her high marks growing up, and more than one offer from the Hunters to apprentice. It made sense—both her father and her brother were Hunters. Even her two younger brothers were well on the way toward Hunter apprenticeships. Felicity had zero interest in the Hunter parts of their DNA, she preferred her flowers and cultivation, working closely with Tiffany Huston. Still, Mimi didn’t share her sister’s interest in horticulture or her mother’s desire to educate their young or her father and brothers’ drive to protect the pack.

She was…not sure who I am, which is why I am doing this.  The year away from her mother served two purposes; she could take some classes and test her areas of interest from art to acting to writing. She could study yoga and find some serenity. Maybe even figure out who she was, because wasn’t that the whole point of a roam? Most wolves took time to roam the country; some even went around the world.

Murphy had done that and came home with a mate. Mimi grimaced. She loved Murphy, but really, could she have not brought home some gorgeous Italian and mated him with all the requisite gossip? It had Mimi’s mother nudging her to consider a year abroad in…where else? Italy. Shaking her head, she paused on a perfectly smooth area of sand and spread her blanket before unrolling her yoga mat in the center.

Closing her eyes, she took several deep breaths. Inhaling calm, and exhaling the stress. Her mother was in Willow Bend. Mimi was in California. No ridiculous blind dates or not-so-casual meetings with eligible bachelors. Thank God Dylan mated before her mother got it into her head to throw Mimi at every male who came along, she’d actually had a crush on Dylan and he definitely fell into the category of eligible before Chrystal.

Growling, she opened her eyes and glared at the water. She was hardly alone on the beach. Laughter drifted towards her from where the surfers made their way toward deeper water, or where some sat astride their boards waiting for the water to come in. She was supposed to be letting go of her anxiety and not stressing about her mother, mating, or any of a dozen other issues being so far away from the pack could rouse in her.

She’d been in California for three weeks. Three gloriously wonderful, and peaceful weeks. This morning marked a full forty-eight hours since her mother’s last phone call. As loathe, as she was to hurt her feelings, Mimi couldn’t help but be relieved that distance had finally done what she hadn’t been able to manage.

Her mother was quiet.

So hush… Telling herself repeatedly didn’t silence the nagging internal monologue. Mindful of her surroundings, she quieted her growl and concentrated on her breathing. Mountain pose let her stretch her hands toward the sky and raise her face to the breeze. It elongated her spine and let her stretch the muscles from her hamstrings to her deltoids. The wind caressed her face and tousled her hair and batted away the riot of thoughts invading her mind.

From mountain she went to tree pose and rested her right foot against the side of her left knee. Her muscles quivered at first, but gradually she relaxed into the sturdiness. Like the tree she emulated, she let the woes of her mother’s romantic aspirations blow past her. The steadiness bolstered her confidence.

Warrior pose drew away the last curtain and let her mind relax. Her wolf stretched within her, their hearing seeming to sharpen as they noticed the increase of traffic beyond, the crash of water against the shore, and the call of birds overhead. Wolf and woman catalogued the sounds as she pushed her body, identifying any potential threats or lack thereof and remaining mindful.

By the time she drifted into a graceful downward dog, she’d relaxed her breathing and banished her anxiety. Curling her toes, she concentrated on feeling the wholeness of the position, the hinging arch of her hips and the warmth of the sand beneath the mat and blanket.

From triangle pose to seated twists to bridges, she pushed her body to achieve perfect serenity while maintaining her sense of being in the present. The sun warmed her as it continued a steady rise, and she basked in the rays as they heated her skin. When she finally settled into a lotus pose, she let her mind drift, as though flotsam upon the waves before her.

The world withdrew, leaving her alone with the lapping water, humming cars, and screech of seagulls…then water dripped on her. The icy sensation of splashing drops was cold against her skin. Though there had been no call for rain in the forecast, she fought to hold onto her sense of inner peace and deepened her breathing…only to inhale a lungful of coconut and brine mingling with the green scent of dewy sea grass atop the sand dunes with slivers of mint and…

Mimi jerked her eyes open and stared into the blue eyes of the wolf squatting right in front of her. His long, straggly hair clung wetly to his face and shoulders. The wet suit left little of his physique to the imagination, and he canted his head as though trying to figure her out. This close, however, she couldn’t miss a single nuance of his expression or the drops of water sliding off of him to splash wetly against her legs.

How the hell had he approached her so stealthily that she hadn’t sensed or scented him before he dripped on her?

Worse…who was he and what did he want?

“Hey, gorgeous,” he said, as though aware of her racing her thoughts. “What brings a sexy little wolf like you to my stretch of beach?” A slow grin spread his mouth wide, and her stomach did a little flip flop. He was gorgeous and damn if he didn’t know it.

Just what she needed…a hot, sexy wolf who was most assuredly male and made her wolf stand up to take notice. Ignoring her animal’s very natural curiosity, she narrowed her eyes. “I was enjoying a quiet morning. Now go away.”

One thing about having Owen for a brother, she wasn’t helpless, even if she was tiny. Closing her eyes again, she forced her muscles to relax and prayed he’d take the direction well, even as she prepared for the worst.

review

I am new to this series so I wasn’t sure what to expect.  This story was a fun read that brought two amazing and well developed characters together.  Jake is just cruising the world trying to find himself and his zen.  Mimi is trying to get some peace and never expected to find anything or anyone like Jake.  Throw in some suspense, drama, some romantic sparks and you have the makings of a fabulous story.

I don’t feel like you need to read the other books in this series in order to enjoy this one but I will be going back and checking them out.

Maybe he can be my one-night stand. I’d do him.
Shouldn’t I at least have a memorable night of sex before I go back home? Hell, I’m getting ahead of myself. He might not have any interest in sex. He might be one of those rare guys who still have morals and not fuck the girl until the second date.
He pushes up on his arms, giving me room to breathe. “Please don’t tell me you’re mad. My feelings will be hurt if you didn’t enjoy that as much as I did.” He smiles and it’s infectious.
I shake my head. “No, I’m not mad. A little surprised. And you’ve left me wondering what your intentions are now,” I state, challenging him to spill his guts.
“Does there have to be an agenda?” he asks. “Can’t a hot guy such as myself kiss a beautiful girl like you all because he wants to see if her succulent lips taste as good as they look?”
I narrow my eyes at him then bust out in laughter. “That has to be the corniest pick-up line I’ve ever heard. Do you say that to all the girls?”
“No. Just the ones I want. Just you,” he says with a blank expression. His clear, blue eyes burn into mine with too much seriousness for my liking. Whatever it is he sees in me, he needs to erase the vision quick. I’m not one to settle into a serious relationship, especially a long distance one. And I’m definitely not one for a good lay whenever he sees fit, if that’s what he’s going for. If sex is involved, it’s because I want it.
My mouth suddenly goes dry. I don’t know how to take his declaration. “Well, okay then.”
He rolls away from me, resting his body on his elbows. “Sorry.” He looks up at the starry sky. “Molly gets pissed at me when I don’t use my filter.” He turns his head and looks my way. “I’m kind of straight-forward. I don’t see any sense in pussy-footing around with what I want to say—or do.”
“Nothing wrong with that, I guess,” I say with a shrug. “I prefer someone to be honest with me rather than feed me a line of bullshit. But as for doing what you want…that can get you in a lot of trouble. You’re lucky I didn’t haul off and punch you in the face.” I chuckle. “But, you’re Molly’s brother and I like her, so I don’t want to screw things up with her because of you. Besides, you’re not bad-looking either. And you’re a pretty good kisser, too,” I say as nonchalantly as I can.
Catching me off guard as I’m staring into the same sky as him, he’s back in my personal space. This time his pretty eyes are hidden in the depths of the night.
“Perfect. Because I’m ready for another round of your tongue,” he says as he goes in for the kill.
I shove my arm in between his body and mine before our lips touch and push him off of me. “Don’t press your luck, lover boy.”
Dramatically, he falls on his back, holds his hands over his heart, and throws in a few faux sniffles. “Wounded.”
Tilting my head in his direction, I give him an apathetic glare. “Tuck your lip back in before you get sand in it.”
He shakes his head. “Damn, girl, you’re harsh. You reject me then pour salt in my wounds.”
I can see him looking at me from the corner of his eye, and he’s trying to contain the smirk on his face. I hope he never attends acting classes because he’ll fail miserably.
He quickly flips over to his side and props himself up on his elbow. “So, you wanna go out later tonight?”
“Wasn’t one rejection enough?”
“Psshhh…I’m secure enough with my game to allow a little refusal here and there. It obviously hasn’t stopped me.”
“So I’m a game to you?”
“No, baby cakes, you’re definitely not a game. I can already see that you don’t like to play,” he adds, protruding his bottom lip.
Would I be a bad person if I admit I want to suck on that lip? Of course, I won’t tell him, but his lips are mighty tasty. And they felt amazing against mine. Maybe I could have a little fun with him while I’m here. Stick to one guy for the week instead of taking my chances with some random freak. I sort of know him, and I sort of know his sister. They seem like good people, so he would be perfect. Plus, he carries a love ‘em and leave ‘em vibe, and that is, after all, what I need. No strings attached.
Propping myself up on an elbow, I turn to face him. “Because I feel sorry for you and your enormous ego, I’ll hang out with you tonight. Let me text my besties one more time to see how they are.”

AP new -about the author.jpg
Jill Patten was born a Yankee, but raised a southerner. She lives in the small town of Mayberry, North Carolina which was made famous by a popular TV show back in the sixties. (Maybe there will one day be a statue of her at the end of Main Street. Ha! A girl can dream, right?)
Jill has always loved to read, even during reading labs in middle school for reading comprehension. Judy Blume was her first author she hero-worshipped, maturing to revere the works of Stephen King. With all the fantastic authors today, she simply cannot choose a favorite. Her taste is very eclectic and she loves almost all genres. When she’s not captivated by her fictional characters, she spends time with her sweet husband and two beautiful children.
Music is her muse. Jill also loves elephants, sarcasm, and anything made with sugar, especially sweet tea. She enjoys all things rude and crude and laughs at stuff she probably shouldn’t. She has been accused of being bossy a time or two, but doesn’t really see it herself.
All in all, Jill is just a small town girl in this great big world trying to enable your book addiction.
Oh, and if you read her book, please leave her a review – good or bad, she’ll love you forever.

Okay…now for the sneak peek!

Here goes:

Xan took a moment to stop herself from laughing. How much had Jay had to drink this time? “Why are you so set on getting married?” she asked carefully. “The mail order bride, the virginity auction, the reality TV show…and now an old friend who worked here before Meier hired me. If you ask me, it smacks of desperation. Which is pretty strange, considering how easily you seem to charm the women you want. What am I missing, Jay?”

“Angel’s wedding,” he mumbled, so quietly she barely caught the words.

“Your bandmate, right? But if it’s her wedding, she’s the one getting married, not you.”

“The invitation said to bring a partner.”

Xan waved her hand. “But you know that’s just a courtesy, right? If you don’t know the name of your guest’s partner when you write the invitation, which can be printed a year in advance, that’s what you put on it, so they can still bring a partner along if they want, and she or he still has an invitation.”

“Not this time. Not when it’s from Angel. It’s her telling me to bring a partner because she thinks I need one.” He eyed the jetty boards, avoiding her gaze.

“And you always do what she says?” Xan asked.

He looked up. “Fuck yes! I like living, with all my bits attached, thanks.”

“But it didn’t say wife, did it? Your invitation? It just said partner, right?” Xan pressed.

“Yeah. The wife bit…that bit…that was me.” He kicked a rock off the jetty. “I said I’d come with my wife, and we’d be so in love we’d put the other couple in the shade.”

Tempting fate, of course. The beginning of a true Greek tragedy. Or a Roman farce, seeing as this involved Jay Felix.

“You could just bring a partner for the night. You don’t seem to have a problem keeping a girl interested that long. I’m sure there are hundreds of girls who’d kill for the chance to attend a wedding with you.”

“Bring a fangirl to Angel’s wedding?” Jay’s eyes widened in horror. “She’d crucify me. Once Jo was done with me, because she’d never forgive me, either. This won’t be a public wedding. You’ll see. Angel won’t allow any media on the island. Shit, she’ll probably have armed security guards stationed along the beaches, ready to shoot down any aircraft within range, drone or manned.”

Xan still didn’t understand what passed for logic in Jay’s mind. “But she’d be happy have a reality TV show starlet or some girl whose virginity you bought in an online auction at her wedding.” She almost added something about his black widow mail order bride, but stopped herself in time. Phuong’s betrayal was a low blow that still had the power to upset him. Xan might not like Jay, but she wasn’t that cruel.

“She wouldn’t have known,” Jay said.

Xan snorted. “That reality TV show aired its first episode last week. The whole country knows about your very public search for a wife. Paige told me the studio is in talks to sell the rights to this season to one of the big networks in the US. Everyone wants to watch the music world’s hottest bachelor find a wife, live in their living room. Your Angel would have to be living under a rock in a bunker with no access to the outside world not to know about THAT.”

Jay sighed heavily. “She’s not my angel. Never was, never will be.” His shoulders slumped and all the fight went out of him.

Finally, Xan understood. “How long have you been in love with her?”06

“What’s it matter?” Angrily, Jay swept the remaining rocks off the jetty with his foot. “She’s marrying that psycho, not me. And Audra says cheaters never get a happily ever after, so I’m fucked on all sides now. Doesn’t matter who I go to her wedding with, because whoever she is, we won’t be happy.” He laughed bitterly. “Because if I cheated on Audra by getting with fangirls on just that one farewell tour, I’ve cheated on Angel hundreds, maybe thousands of times. Doesn’t matter that there was no love or relationship involved with any of them. She’ll never want me.”

“Sometimes the one person we want is the one we can’t have,” Xan said. That was the whole bit about the hero’s quest in all the ancient stories, right? A hero haring off after some impossible goal?

“Would you get back with a guy who cheated on you?” Jay challenged.

Xan hesitated. Would she get back with Jerome? “No,” she answered finally. “It’s too big a betrayal. I hope his dick shrivels up and no one ever loves him again.”

Jay plucked at his shorts. “You want my dick to do what? Hey, there’s nothing about that in any of the books. Never being loved is enough, don’t you think?”

Yes. Maybe it was. Xan would settle for never seeing Jerome again, to be honest, let alone any shrivelling. Except….there was the problem of the reopening of the Mangrove Hotel. Maybe she and Jay could help each other out.

“You know what?” Xan said. “If you come with me to an official function in town next month, I’ll make a deal with you. If you still can’t find an acceptable partner to attend your bandmate’s wedding with, I’ll go with you.”

“And marry me, too?” Jay realised his mistake as soon as the words left his lips. “Okay, sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. Forget I said it. She’ll already know you’re the hotel manager here, and she won’t believe…”

“That’s right,” Xan interrupted. “What do you say? Is it a deal?”

“Yeah.” Jay eyed her with what Xan might have called relief. “Thanks, Xan. I guess that makes us friends, doesn’t it?”

Xan nodded, biting her tongue before she blurted out the bit about her friendship coming with an absolute lack of benefits. Instead, she wished him a nice evening, and headed back to her house, vowing to help him find a better date for the wedding than her. Whatever it took.

And she had to meet this Angel, who had the power to both terrify and enthral a man like Jay Felix.
