JIMMY
Marcus walked in as we started up “Agility” again. I decided to end the practice how we’d started it, and the guys liked the idea. I played my intro and stepped up to the mic. I was about to sing the first line when I caught sight of Marcus’s expression.
He looked ashen, like he’d just been punched in the stomach then told his dog had died.
I slapped my fingers over the guitar strings and raised a fist to shut the band up. The music petered out, Jace being the last to pick up on my cue.
“What?” I scowled at our manager, my stomach pinching as I waited for the bad news. Had Torrence fucking pulled out on us? They couldn’t do that. We had a contract.
“It’s, uh…” Marcus rubbed the back of his neck, his shell-shocked gaze trained on mine. “It’s Nessa,” he ended in a whisper.
My heart lurched in my chest, and I froze on the spot. I never wanted to hear her name said in a broken whisper like that again. The look on Marcus’s face shredded my guts.
“Where is she?” Ralphie

“Arkansas,” Marcus murmured. His eyes were still on me, etched with horrified sadness.
She’s dead. My Nessa is dead.
The air in my lungs turned to liquid nitrogen.
“What the fuck is she doing there?” Flick’s temper always showed when he was scared. That only made it worse. Flick’s reaction confirmed I wasn’t imagining the look on Marcus’s face.
Our manager swallowed then let out a long sigh. “She’s been in a motorcycle accident.”
My grip on the neck of my guitar tightened, and my jaw worked to the side as I fought for the strength to ask, “Is she still alive?” I could barely whisper the words.
“Yes,” Marcus assured me with a quick nod. “But she’s…” His forehead wrinkled, his lips dipping into a sorrowful frown.
“But what!” I shouted.
Marcus flinched then grimaced. “I’m sorry, man, but…she’s lost her hand. She…they had to amputate.”
NESSA
He closed the space between us and rested his hands on either side of my legs, leaning down so he could look me in the eye. “I know I burned you, but I was trying to protect us—the band, our friendship. I thought I was doing the right thing.”
“By ripping out my heart?” I whispered.
Remorse cut into his expression, making his mouth dip. “I figured it’d be like ripping off a Band-Aid. It’d sting, but then things would go back to normal. I’m not a long-term guy.”
I leaned away from him, placing my hand on his shoulder and forcing him back. “And that’s what you want to be now? You want to play boyfriend? What makes you think you can?”
“Because you left!” His voice pitched, his face bunching with anguish. “You left me, and I went out of my fucking mind.” The pads of his fingers skimmed my cheek, running gently down my face before pausing on my jawline. “I finally got a taste of life without you, and I couldn’t handle it.”

But when things are rough I just laugh and tell stories. Because at the end of the day sometime laughter and love is all you have. Somewhere in the midst of kids and chickens, I managed to finish my first novel and dive deeply into the second.
