Embarrassment? That’s a thing of the past. This is my life now, and those that don’t like it can go straight to hell.

But then he came along and screwed everything up. Colt Maverick. For once in my life, I want more, crave more from one guy. A guy that’s sweet and doesn’t match my hard interior. A guy that looks at me like he wants to eat me alive and claim me as his own. A guy that will most definitely not be okay with my addiction. “Oh God, please make it stop,” I moan through the pain gripping my stomach.

It’s never been this bad before. I can barely breath through the pain. Each breath in and out alternates between feeling like a million tiny dull knifes are scraping my insides to sharp needles puncturing ever surface of my skin. I draw my knees closer to my chest and tighten my arms around them. I shiver uncontrollably. I’m not sure if it’s my regular shaking or if it’s because of the blast of icy cold water raining down on me. I’m naked in the shower because my body felt like it was on fire. I needed to cool off. The water is no longer helping, now it just feels like small drops of lava are being poured all over me. My head pounds and tears drip down my cheeks, mingling with the water.

I want to move, I want to get out, but I’m so fucking scared. I barely made it to the shower in the first place. The cramps were so bad that I literally had to crawl my way into the bathroom, barely making it to the toilet before emptying my stomach.

Why in the hell did I decide to put myself through this? I should have known better. I should have known this wouldn’t work. I’ve tried this before. I don’t know if this time is worse or if I’ve just forgotten the pain of not giving my godforsaken body what it craves.

I try to clench my teeth shut, but they still manage to chatter together. I’m surprised I haven’t chipped any. You know when you’re so cold that your body is constantly spasming to get your blood flowing to warm your body? Yeah, that’s me right now. My entire body is starting to cramp from the ridged way I’ve been holding it for the past twenty minutes.

I feel so goddamn hopeless. I don’t even have my phone with me to call for help. All I can do it sit here and pray the city runs out of water soon. I silently laugh hysterically at myself with that thought. I’m so fucking stupid.

I drop my head on my knees and cry out when the slight movement causes a well of pain to go through my chest and stomach. I cry, but I try to do it softly, so my body doesn’t rack with sobs, making the pain worse.

My fuddled mind turns to Blue. I see his gorgeous Caribbean blue eyes staring at me and it brings a new pain to my chest. One that has nothing to do with my body’s need for fulfillment. This pain is focused on me accepting once and for all that there’s no way we could ever work out. I feel like my world is cracking in two, and I’m being torn into pieces. I didn’t realize how badly I want this to work, until I realized it never would. I’m mourning something that never really started.

Squeezing my eyes shut, I sit as still as I can and wish for the coldness of the water to numb my body, to take away the pain that’s slowly destroying me, knowing that it’s a wish that won’t come true.

I pulled the door open and couldn’t get the grin off my face. People wonder why professional athletes were so cocky. Because a plumber couldn’t pull of what I just accomplished tonight.
“I’m sorry, what was your name again?” I raised my eyebrows.
She narrowed her eyes and I sensed it took considerable effort for her to stay.
I grinned again and took another sip. I studied her face. She was a classic beauty; big brown eyes and wavy dark brown hair that flowed over her shoulders. I would guess she was Italian, but her accent was American.
She bit her lip and crossed her hands over her chest.
I laughed.
“Am I amusing you?” She asked.
“No,” I shook my head. “Just laughing at the irony of the situation.”
“Can you just,” she held a hand up. “Not talk.”
“What would you like me to do with my mouth?”
Lust flashed in her eyes. She covered it by walking in, grabbing the bottle in my hand and downing it. I saw it thought. She liked the dirty talk.
She stepped to the window. I walked up behind her. I stood a few inches away, but she could feel my heat and I sensed her shiver.
“You ready?” I asked.
“Ready for what?”
She turned her head towards me.
“Ready for me to fuck that ten punch chip off your shoulder?”
She spun on her heels and stared into my eyes. Her chest rose and fell, her breath shallow and sexy. I peaked at the curve of her breast and wanted to taste it, but stopped myself. She wanted me to make the first. I wouldn’t give her the satisfaction.
There we stood, toe to toe. I took in the subtleties of her face. The curve of her cheek, the twitch in her lip when she tried to remain neutral.
She leaned in and I leaned in. She turned her head to the left. I turned mine to the left. She licked her lips and I did the same. A small wrinkle creased the top of her nose and I knew it was only a matter of time.
When she stepped back, I masked my disappointment.
She leaned against the window and sighed. Oh man if it wasn’t the sexiest sound I had ever heard and I had heard some scandalous stuff in my time.
I stood my ground. The distance allowed me to check out the rest of her. I was right, her amazing body made me hard. It was around the time my gaze feel on her legs, that she caught me off guard and attacked me.
Chai gripped the side of my face, tilted it and dove on my lips. Her hand moved down and gripped the back of my neck and pressed our faces together. I nibbled on her lip and she opened and I met her aggression with some of my own when I pressed my tongue in her mouth and tasted her. Her tongue tasted like tequila and honey.
I hadn’t put my hands on her. She must have noticed. She pulled away. Her hand went up to her mouth and the confusion in her eyes broke me. She stepped around me, but I pulled her back into my chest.
“Where you going?” I asked as I cupped her breast and ran my hand up her skirt between her thighs. She whimpered. She tried to pull away at first, but sank into me and pushed my hand up further.
I skimmed my hand over her silk panties and her knees buckled. I held her up and walked us both over to the bed.
I pushed her down and she flipped onto her back. Her hands splayed out and gripped the sheets. I unbuttoned my shirt and pulled it off. I stood in front of her. I wanted to see her.
“Your turn.”
She sat up, unbuttoned her shirt and pulled it off. She deposited it on the floor with mine. The black lace bra framed her breast so well, I had to reach out and touch them. I ran my fingers over the curve of her mound. They were real.
Yes!!!
I reached for the button on my pants, but she pushed my hands away.
“May I?”
I pushed her hands away and she pouted. Again, made me hard.
“Is this what you want?” I rubbed the bulge in my pants.
God, please say yes. Please say yes.
She smiled and nodded. It was the first genuine smile I’d seen on her face.
It looked good on her.
I dropped my hands to my side. She unbuttoned my pants and pushed them down off my hips. She ran a hand over my bulge and I smiled. She reached into my shorts, pulled me out, licked her lips and smiled again.
I was done. She was so beautiful and so complex. I couldn’t hold back. Enough with the games. I had to have her.
By the way she stroked me and pulled me into bed, she wanted me, too.

You’re never prepared for the sound of someone breaking down your front door.

The wood splinters, the sound like a bone snapping. The doorknob hits the wall. My adrenaline is a gunshot to my chest.

BAM.

For a moment, I am perfectly still, the frog in the flashlight beam. My book falls onto the covers with a muffled thump. My hands are shaking and my vision is blurry. I can’t breathe right. This doesn’t feel real, but I know it is.

We have a security system, state of the art, but it doesn’t go off. Why doesn’t it go off?

More splintering sounds, a loud thud, a slam. Footsteps.

I hear voices.

I run toward the window. It doesn’t have a latch. It isn’t supposed to open. Of course not. I hit it with the heels of my hands, but I know the glass won’t break, because it is bulletproof.

They had to have heard that. I have to get out of here now.

I kick the glass so hard I fall back on the bed. When I push myself up, somebody’s in the doorway.

Everything slows down and becomes painfully distinct.

He’s not tall, but he’s muscled, with a blunt, square face. The dark shape of him in my doorway is foreign and wrong, like a spider in the shower. He’s blocking the hall, and behind him, I barely hear the shatter of things falling in the kitchen over the roaring of blood in my ears.

He’s looking at me, and I’m looking at him. My mind jumps ahead to what is going to happen next, but then I stop thinking about that because I’m not going to give up yet. The feeling surges inside me, a wave of fierce and terrible protest.

He yells something to someone in another room, but I can’t understand him. My brain has stopped processing language. Instead, I’m seeing the room around me. The exits. There’s no door out except the one he’s standing in. I can’t run through the walls.

I’m trapped.

The world slows down. Time feels like cement, and every eye blink takes a thousand years. I reach behind me and grab anything I can reach—a hairbrush. It’s the most worthless weapon in the world, but I clutch it to my chest like it’s a knife. I’m thinking, WHERE IS MY CELL PHONE?

I can’t breathe.

A girl steps into the doorway beside the guy. She has dark brown hair and a flawlessly beautiful face, but her smile is angry. A toboggan hat is pulled down almost to her eyebrows, and she’s wearing slouchy torn jeans. She’s chewing gum, and she blows a bright pink bubble as she points at me. Her fingernails are painted sky blue.

They come around the bed. I back up to the wall. My heart slams against my ribs.

Fight, flight, or freeze. Those are my options. I can’t flee, so fight or freeze?

I pick fight.
