Bestselling author Emma Nichols presents a new adult contemporary romance fans and critics are comparing to works of Jennifer Weiner. Snark and heart make The Souvenir a novel that will leave readers desperate for more.

Wren Jacobs—a twenty-something corporate trainer— would like to announce the birth of her baby, Taylor, named after the artist singing “Bad Blood” during the conception. Mother and child are adjusting nicely and ready to welcome visitors, especially the father, Brady Conner.

Despite a few too many misunderstandings, Wren never stopped loving Brady…and would love the opportunity to thank him for her souvenir from their relationship who weighed in at a whopping 8lbs 5oz, effectively ruining her after an unintentional natural delivery. Taylor’s birth will forever remind Wren of the first day of summer, the last time she was ever able to wear a bikini, and that she’ll probably never go to a bar again.

Follow Wren and Brady as they navigate through the tricky dating scene in this touching romantic comedy, and fall in love with the souvenir of their relationship.

Rthe-souvenir-teaser-broke-my-heartead A Few Excerpts…

The radio blared a Kid Rock song we used to sing together. All signs pointed to success. A smile even played on the corner of my lips as I stepped out of the truck carrying her breakfast. When I neared the breezeway, I could hear her voice coming from outside. Curious, I peeked around the corner, determined to find her. I hesitated when I realized there was a male voice joined with hers.
“So, you’re going to the doctor, right?” Her voice sounded light, happy.
I flattened myself against the side of the building, out of sight, but not out of earshot. I hoped if I listened long enough, I’d recognize the guy, or at least know if she was a lost cause.
“What the hell do I need a doctor for?” The guy laughed.
I heard the scrape of a chair on concrete and imagined the worst.
“It’s not natural to pee that much. And it could be lethal to flush that early.”
They both laughed at her words. Great. They already had a shared joke.
“No, but seriously, Trey.” Apparently she waited for the new guy to stop laughing.
“Okay. Serious.”
She giggled, a sound, which normally brought me such joy, but instead brought on new chest pains. I dropped the Panera bag in the grass so I could rub my sternum.
“Is that your serious face? Really?” Wren laughed again. “No more with the flushing or we’re through.”
“Okay!” Trey chuckled. “I wouldn’t want to give up all this. I love scalding hot tea. My taste buds may never recover.” He cleared his throat. “Luckily, I had the toaster strudel to ice it down with.”
Wren snickered. “Stop it. It wasn’t that bad. Oh, and if you want a better breakfast, you should’ve brought it.”
“Touché. In my defense, I couldn’t be sure you were worth the chocolate croissants.”
A chair creaked. “How about now?”

Excerpt Two…the-souvenir-teaser-dont-blow-it

“Wait. You’re still leaving?” His frown deepened.

My brow furrowed. “You had Paige here last night.” I gestured to my side of the bed. “She slept on my pillow, drank from my glass, and left it dirty. Fuck yeah, I’m leaving.” I sighed angrily. “I found an apartment.” My shoulders heaved as I wrapped myself in dreams of a better future. “I signed the lease and paid the deposit, but it won’t be ready until next Saturday.”

Brady sat up and brightened some. “Okay. Did you want to stay here until then?”

I stared at him, frowning slightly. “What? You think if I stay here for a week, you can get me to forgive you?” I rolled my eyes. “Please. I can’t think of anything that would make me forgive you, or inspire me to give you another chance to break my heart.” I tilted my head for a moment and tapped my chin. “Nope. Nothing.”

the-souvenir-teaser-one-more-timeExcerpt Three…

Leaning over, Brady stared at the carpet with his hands clasped in front of him. “I thought you had some deal you wanted to make, something you wanted to discuss.”

Seeing him weak made me feel strong. Setting the box on the floor, I knelt in front of him, forcing him to look at me. “I’m not for you, Brady. She’s the one you were supposed to be with, remember? I’m getting out of your way…not that I seem to be stopping you.” I jerked my head toward the bed to emphasize my point. “Let me keep my stuff here until I can move into the apartment next weekend. Help me move it in, since you refuse to let anyone else do it. I’ll play nice.”

His piercing blue eyes studied my face. I could actually see him considering my offer. He licked his lips before speaking. “What’s in it for me?”

I shrugged. “I told you. I’ll play nice.”

Brady forced a smile that never reached his eyes. “Not much of an incentive.”

Exhaling deeply, I sat back on the floor and stared up at him. “What do you want, Brady?” I didn’t feel like playing games. At the moment, I didn’t really feel like packing either, but at least doing so would’ve moved me closer to my goal.

“I want you. One more time. You owe me that much.” He transformed before my eyes. Minutes before he’d appeared broken, completely wounded. Now, Brady had become calculating and determined, a dangerous combination.

“You want me one more time. What? Sex?” With a laugh, I shook my head. “I owe you?” I stood and crossed my arms over my chest. “How’s that?”

“You broke our agreement. You promised you’d give our living arrangement six months before you ever considered leaving. It has only been five.”

Heather paused, rested her weight on his thighs, her mouth opened slightly. Nicolo stared at her in wonder, his eyes probing hers, looking for something deep in her soul. They both froze. Stared. Unable to find the correct words for what they were feeling. A slight breeze whipped her hair up, but she did not move.

Although they sat motionless, their breathing quickened. Without speaking, they knew at that moment.

Nicolo grinned. “Stop? Never. Are you kidding?” He kissed her again, more powerful this time. “Heather, I’ve never loved anyone else, I’ve never found anyone like you and I never will. I should have called you after I left Northford. I should have fought for you every single day. All those years we wasted living apart. Five additional years I could have spent with you in my lifetime. I won’t let another day pass.”

She lingered for several minutes staring at the empty doorway. Shoppers glanced at Heather and her dazed expression. Guilt of what she had done to him resurfaced. Her deep love for him – something she tried desperately to forget – emerged.

Fate. Gone.

BLITZ! PLAYING TO WIN BY SHELLEY MUNRO

Blurb:

The truth has many layers…

Professional rugby player, Lane Gerrard is used to women throwing themselves at him, but a scurrilous tabloid article naming him as father of a child sends his temper soaring. The woman he confronts doesn’t fit the blackmailer profile. Kate Alexander is attractive with an enchanting innocence, enticing. A total stranger. Her feistiness draws his unwilling admiration, but the child…he is the image of Lane.
Kate can’t deny her son’s similarity to the sexy man at her door but no way will she hand him over without a fight. Kate doesn’t possess money but she can shower her son with love. With public speculation rife, Kate reluctantly works with Lane to discover the truth. They grow closer as distrust slowly turns to mutual fascination, but the tabloid articles bring out a stalker. Mild pranks escalate into danger, and suddenly Lane realizes Kate is a woman he could love. With Kate and her son, he could have a family. Now, with his heart on the line, this is one game he’s playing to win…

playingtowingnome

Read A Few Excerpt…

“We need to talk. Would you like to stay for dinner?” Kate’s voice held sympathy. “It’s nothing fancy. Corned beef and vegetables.”
Camp out with the enemy. Lane considered her offer then shrugged. It was magnanimous considering the way he’d treated her earlier. If the situation were reversed, he didn’t think he would have shown the same generosity. He surveyed her for an instant longer before nodding. Why not? Heck—he couldn’t even state she positively was the enemy. It wouldn’t hurt to get to know her and the child. The answers lay here, not in the tabloid stories. “Thank you. I’d like that.” His attention wandered to the boy—Jamie.
His son?
Or one of his brothers?
Either way, Lane saw trouble ahead. If Jamie was John’s child, Sabrina would be hurt and upset, but their marriage appeared strong and would survive. On the other hand, if Jamie were Will’s, then this child’s presence would destroy his brother’s marriage. Will and Tanya were still patching things up after a trial separation. On top of that, no matter how things turned out, his mother would worry and that wasn’t good.
The child was a ticking bomb.
It didn’t take Lane long to weigh the consequences. He couldn’t let his brothers take the heat. Not yet. He clenched his jaw, his resolve strengthening. He would have to assume parentage until he learned the truth. All he needed to do was keep the press at bay.
Jamie looked up and Lane’s heart jolted. Recognition seared through him as he met the boy’s gaze. Deep down in his gut, he sensed it.
This boy was his son.

Excerpt Two…

“Do you want me to answer the door?”
Kate hesitated before heaving a resigned sigh. “No, I’ll go.”
When she reached the front door, she halted, took a deep breath and pasted a smile on her face. She opened the door. Her smile faded when she came face-to-face with two police officers. Alarm flared within her. The police did a wonderful job but personally, Kate could do without them arriving at her front door. They brought bad news. She gulped and took another deep, fortifying breath.
“Is something wrong?” she asked. “Jamie, my son?”
They both flipped identification at Kate. “Are you the owner of this property?”
Kate scanned the IDs without really seeing them and slowly lifted her gaze back to their faces. What else could go wrong today? “Yes. How can I help you?”
One of the police officers took a small notebook from his pocket. “What is your name please?”
“Katherine Alexander. Is something wrong?”
The two officers exchanged a guarded look. “Do you own any garden gnomes, Mrs. Alexander?”
“It’s Miss.”
“Miss Alexander, do you own garden gnomes?” he asked his question patiently.
“Gnomes?” Kate stared, waiting for the punch line.
“Yes, gnomes,” one officer repeated, his lips twitching in what looked like the beginnings of a grin.
“No.” Kate shook her head. Personally, she thought they were ugly.
An elderly woman marched around the corner of Kate’s house. Tall and lean, the woman’s dress hung on her body like clothes on a hanger. Straight up and down. A coat hanger with a temper, Kate amended when she took in the woman’s pinched lips.
“No doubt about it!” The woman’s voice sounded as sharp as her angles. “They’re mine! The person on the telephone told me they were my gnomes, that she’d stolen them.” She folded her arms across her scrawny chest and gave a defiant nod. “I want them back. Gnome-napper!”

Excerpt Three…

A few steps into the room, Kate hesitated then shrugged and stepped boldly forward. Lane’s bedroom appeared tidy but had a lived-in feel and more individuality than any of the other rooms. The lingering fragrance of his cologne and a touch of lemon furniture polish scented the air. Kate’s breath quickened with sudden sensual awareness.
A king-size bed dominated the room but she looked away hurriedly when unwanted images, steamy images of entwined bodies flashed through her fertile imagination. Her pulse spiked and her skin felt hot all over. Horrified, she shook the vision away, impatient with her graphic thoughts of sex and lovemaking. Kate fixed her attention on the display of photos covering a nearby portion of the bedroom wall. Gradually, her pulse slowed as she perused the faces in the portraits.
Safer.
Much safer.
The only trouble was that the faces in the photographs bore wide grins as though they’d witnessed her discomfort. When color filled her cheeks, Kate searched for something else to take her mind off Lane.
She spied an en suite and pushed the connecting door open. The large spa bath—big enough for two—caused an action replay. Masculine and feminine limbs entwined. Hot passion and slow, drugging kisses while the couple made love. Kate’s right hand shot to the cold water tap. A burst of frigid water would force her confused emotions to order.
The scuff of a foot on carpet jerked her head up. There it was again. Kate jumped about to stare in the direction of the noise, her heart pushing and clawing its way up her throat. The door squeaked as a hand pushed it open.
Someone was entering the bedroom.
Gasping, Kate searched frantically for a place to hide. Behind the door—it was the only possible place. She leapt into hiding, her heart hammering loudly enough to play in a rock and roll band.
But not quite fast enough.

While travel is still a big attraction, these days Shelley is most likely found in front of her computer following another love – that of writing stories of romance and adventure. BLITZ! UNTITLED BEAUTY BY C.E. WILSON

513kzvvspbl-_uy250_

Click Here to get it on Amazon!

Blurb:

Eleven. A name. A title. A sentence passed. If you aren’t a Beauty, you’re less than a person. You’re a commodity known as a Potential… and you only have so many chances to qualify as a human being.

In her seventeen years, Eleven has seen the best and worst in humanity. She’s been passed around and abused by the bad. She’s hoped and dreamed for the good. And she’s despaired for the hand she’s been dealt. Now she’s been purchased by a wealthy man who has the ability to improve her life and help her become a Beauty – if she can put up with his erratic and controlling personality for long enough, that is. Complicating things is the appearance of a stunningly beautiful young man with amethyst eyes who treats Eleven to the rarest form of attention for a Potential: kindness.

Does Eleven trust her powerful owner to help her escape this life of servitude and enslavement, or does she gamble everything on the enigmatic young man who seems to offer her more than she could ever imagine possible?

Read A Few Excerpt…

I hate how beauty permits enslaving the beasts.

With money and a sponsor, even the ugliest person can have flawlessness and receive anything they’d want out of life. With good looks, they can live a full life. The old days when anyone could be ugly and still live happily and normally are long gone. Flawlessness and beauty is the only way to survive. Flawlessness comes naturally with good genes or money. By any means possible, Potentials have to find a way to obtain beauty.

This new life offers five chances to earn the title of Beauty. Five measly chances to prove your worth to people who hold the right to exist peacefully in this cruel world in their porcelain-like hands.

Excerpt Two…

Play by the rules when dealing with Beauties. That is the only way to survive.

My true name isn’t Eleven, but, I’ll let my new family decide what they’ll call me.

Here I am – seventeen years old and an Eleven. So close and yet so far from being beautiful.

I tug on the chain hanging from my neck in irritation and bite my lower lip for a second before looking up towards the tiny hole in my cell door, my only source of light.

I may be a Potential, but my true name is Grace. And I will achieve beauty by any means possible.

Excerpt Three…

“I want to see you. Won’t you please lift your head?”

His kind voice and false modesty are making me sick. He only wants to look at me to satisfy himself. He only wants to see what I look like because he’s flawless. He’s sicker than the other ones. Maybe not as sick as Shawn – I have the scabs on my lips to prove that – but being less sadistic than a controlling megalomaniac isn’t that impressive.

But before I can tell my body to resist, I jerk up my head and focus my sharp hazel eyes on his.

Recognition. A long-forgotten memory surges into my mind, but it is driven away by a sharp pain at my neck. As the memory retreats, waves of pain replace it until the world is made of agony and darkness.

Then only darkness.

Blurb:travesty-teaser-1

ABRAM–Feeling sorry for myself wasn’t a foreign feeling. In fact, I’d spent the better part of the first year with Jim and Pat, wishing I was dead. But I’d had a moment of realization one night as I laid on my back, staring at the water-stained ceiling. I wouldn’t be fourteen forever. One day, I’d be a grown man. One who could live where he wanted; work where he wanted. Once I had my mind set right, I stayed focused. Every now and then, I’d slip, but mind over matter had become my mantra.
SOPHIA–I turned around to run as fast as I could, when something hit me so hard in the head, it felt like it cracked my skull. My ears rang and a blood-curdling scream stuck in my throat. My lungs stung with the air trapped inside of them. I clenched my teeth at the sharp, intense pain shooting down my neck from the right side of my brain.
As dizziness took over, my body crumpled to the floor and my sight left me. The last thing I remembered was the slow trickle of warm liquid running down my temple and seeping into my ear. It muffled my hearing just before everything faded to black.
ABRAM–Her small body was the perfect size, and folded into me with ease. It felt so warm and safe having someone to hang on to. I had never felt like this before. Granted, I’d never been in a situation like this before, but there was something different about her. I felt like I could actually trust her, and that was huge. Add in the fact she considered me her hero, and I was done for. I wasn’t dumb though. I knew I was all she had, but it still affected me. It made me wish for something more between us, more for myself, and that was unsettling. Wishing for more wasn’t something I was familiar with. My world up until this point had been based on survival, not planning a future with a white picket fence.

Jasper grew up knowing the first time a wolf sets eyes on his mate, his life is changed forever. While the bond between them could be an amazing connection, it would also leave him vulnerable to loss and unimaginable pain. He’d seen it happen and vowed to never experience it first hand.

Two people. Two wolves. One chance to heal their souls.

Read An Excerpt…

“The longer I’m around you, the better I get to know you, the more similarities I see between us. The more our wolves desires make sense.” Jasper shook his head. “They choose. They know. We’re both finding it hard to accept.”
Her face fell. “I understand.” She started to turn and leave the room, but he grabbed her bicep and stopped her.
“Let me finish.” There was an edge to his voice. This man was used to getting his way. Amber nodded sadly and he continued. “See, I never wanted to be mated.” She frowned. “After my mother died in an accident, my father wasted away. He couldn’t handle life without her.” He swallowed hard and Amber ached inside. “I saw him as weak. I never wanted to be vulnerable like that.”
Jasper jerked his head toward the couch. “Can we please go sit? This…is harder than I thought.” His golden brown eyes darkened.
“Of course.” Amber removed his hand from her arm and held his hand instead, leading the way to the loveseat. She motioned for him to sit in the corner, then she curled up against him. “Better?”

Nodding sadly, Jasper admitted, “Yes, and worse.” He caressed the side of her face. “I can see why he died now. The bond is stronger between some pairs than others. Already, I can tell if anything ever happened to you, I’d be devastated.” He leaned his head back on the couch. “I never wanted this, but I do want you.”

Lyssa Layne is first, and foremost, the proud momma to her precious daughter, AR. In addition to working full-time and being a mommy to AR, she is also an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, a runner, blogger, and an infertility survivor.

Having watched one too many medical dramas and being inspired by author Rachelle Ayala, who introduced her to the world of indie writing, Lyssa decided to try her hand at writing a romance story. Her attempt turned into the Burning Lovesick series. You can find Lyssa’s own interests throughout her stories although all stories are fictional.

Born and raised in San Jose, California, she now resides in her own little bit of heaven in the Sierra Tahoe National Forest Basin, with her husband of 35 years, their three sons and one daughter, and four very precious grandkids, and a menagerie of animals: 2 horses, 5 goats and 3 sheep

Meet The Author…

A.D. Ellis spends the majority of her days loving and wrangling two school-aged children and a husband before heading to the inner city of Indiana to teach a challenging group of alternative education students in grades third through sixth. Most days she hits the gym after school in hopes of running and lifting away the stress and headaches of the day before picking up her children and squeezing a whole day’s worth of loving and living into the too-short hours before bed. It’s no wonder Ms. Ellis lives for the slower, easier days she gets to enjoy on breaks from school.
Growing up in a small farming town in southern Indiana, A.D. is grateful to her mother for passing along the love of reading. With her nose constantly stuck in a book, Ms. Ellis became accustomed to friends and acquaintances snickering and shaking their heads at her love of reading.
A.D. never dreamed of being anything but a teacher, although there are certain times of the year when she laments her career choice. Ms. Ellis had a story idea floating in her head for about a year. After persistent prodding from a friend, A.D. put pen to paper and began writing her first story in October 2013. From that moment on, she was hooked. Taking the people and stories from her head and sharing them with readers is a scary, exhausting, rewarding, and fulfilling experience which A.D. plans to continue until there are no more stories banging around in her mind.

Blurb:

The invasion has begun, and he’s the only one who can stop them.

Zephyr Cree has made it his mission to stop the aliens that have been terrorizing the galaxy. He takes his warship to the planet Earth to rescue what he can of the human race. But when he meets a human, Addison Montgomery, he is inspired by her tenacity, and maybe just a little bit smitten with the gorgeous human. The last thing he needs is a distraction, but fate has other things in mind for him.

Stranded in a remote location during an alien invasion was the last thing Addison Montgomery expected when she ventured out on a fieldtrip with a bus full of second graders. Daughter of one of the top generals in the country everyone is turning to her for answers. It’s a role she didn’t ask for and doesn’t want, but she knows she has to protect everyone she can. When the dangerous aliens attack, Addison prepares to fight them, but at the last minute a fiery phoenix swoops in to save the day — literally. There’s not just one alien species on the planet but two. Now she just has to convince the hot phoenix shifter, Zephyr, to help her save the world, while keeping her libido in check around him, no big deal, right?

Read Excerpt One…

Zephyr stiffened as Addison shifted, moving so her head was on his shoulder. The couch was small and he half expected her to sit up and move away from him to finish watching the movie, but she didn’t. He peered down at her. Her eyes were shut and her breathing steady. It appeared she was sleeping and he’d wager she had no clue about her precarious situation against him.
He didn’t mind her weight or closeness. It was nice. She smelled like honey and the berries they’d shared earlier. It was an intoxicating smell and he couldn’t help but study her features more closely now that she wouldn’t be aware of his staring.
Physically, she looked similar to the women of his planet, but there was something different about her. She was resilient, yet passionate and she knew exactly what she wanted. Unlike many of the people on his planet, he suspected she didn’t follow orders unless she wanted to. He was one of the few people that challenged the government on Delphi, asking them to do more about the Imanji threat. That was probably part of the reason they allowed him to have his ship—to shut him up. Deep down he suspected they knew he was right.
The Imanji were his people’s problem. Just because they couldn’t penetrate Delphi’s shields, didn’t mean they wouldn’t return one day and attempt to destroy the planet. The second time around the Imanji might succeed.
Addison jumped as one of the characters in the movie screamed. She shot up so fast her forehead collided with his. A curse escaped her lips and she smacked a hand over her eyes, rubbing her palm over her skin as she blinked.
“Are you okay?” he asked as he watched her.
“Yeah. I’m so sorry. I didn’t even realize I fell asleep,” she said as she dropped her hand to her lap. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.” The bump hadn’t fazed him at all.
Addison shifted to the opposite end of the couch, pulling her feet up on her cushion and leaning against the armrest. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to invade your space.”
“It’s okay. No apology is needed.” Part of him wondered if it’d be okay to tell her he enjoyed it. He had no idea how she would respond to that.
“So, what did I miss?” Addison said turning her focus to the TV.
“Not much.” He opened his mouth to tell her about the movie, but stopped when she moved again and sat up straighter.
“Jeesh, the movie barely started and I already fell asleep? I must be more tired than I realized,” she said as she combed a hand through her hair. “Maybe I should head off to bed. We have a big day tomorrow.”
He stood and grabbed the remote. His eyes scanned over the symbols, but he had no idea how to work it. He turned to her and offered a smile. “How do you turn it off?”
She waved her hand at him as she got close enough for their shoulders to brush against each other. “You just hit this button and it will turn everything off.” She touched a button that had a circle on it. “But don’t turn it off on my account. I’ve seen Terminator before. You might enjoy it.”
It seemed like an all right movie, but he didn’t feel like watching it without her. “No. I should turn in, too.”
“Oh, okay, then,” she said, leaning in close again to turn off the TV.
Her scent hit him again and he breathed it in. His phoenix rumbled beneath the surface, begging him to reach out and touch her. His bird craved Addison, and it hadn’t needed a woman in a long time. He didn’t fraternize with the women on his ship. It was too complicated and none of them caught his interest, not like Addison had.
“There,” she said as she turned to him. Her breath caught in her throat as she too must have noticed how close their mouths were. Her tongue darted out to lick her lips. “I should probably go to bed,” she swallowed not letting her gaze leave his.
“Addison?” he asked as he reached out to touch her cheek. Her skin was soft beneath his fingers, which he trailed over her jaw, caressing his thumb over her lips.
“Yeah,” she said her voice so quiet he barely heard it.
He moved his thumb and pressed his lips against hers. She gasped into his mouth, but her hands went to his shoulders as her tongue swooped out to trail over his teeth.14522581_1183920838320918_2036180305_o

Read Excerpt Two…

Addison opened her mouth, but her voice got caught in her throat as footsteps thundered up the wooden steps and across the front porch.
Nausea rolled in her belly and she shivered. Whipping her head toward the door, she held her breath. Her ears strained to hear if the children were fleeing, but the only sound greeting her was the staccato of her roaring pulse.
As the doorknob silently twisted, she lifted her arm up, ready to jab the blade into whomever came in. She glanced at Marcus, wordlessly agreeing to do whatever was necessary to keep the others safe.
The wooden deck outside creaked and Addison’s breath caught in her throat as the door flew open and slammed against the opposite wall. She whirled around, shrieking as her blade sunk into yellowish skin. The alien’s red eyes widened as it squawked. Its arm reached up, grasping at her chest and propelling her backward. She tried to hold onto the knife embedded in the alien for balance, but she couldn’t. Her feet flew out from under her as she catapulted across the room, hitting a glass case. Crashing through it, she sent glass raining down around her as she met the unforgiving floor, grunting as the hardwood bit into her.
Ignoring the pain slicing through her extremities, she grasped a jagged piece of glass and scrambled to her feet. Her vision blurred and she blinked rapidly to get her eyes to focus. I have to fight.
“S-s-s-stop!” A voice hissed.
Addison gasped as the voice echoed in her mind. Her limbs froze, refusing to budge. She whimpered and tried to force her foot to move; it shook from exertion, but lifted off the floor.
“Stop.” The voice insisted again.
Addison gripped her head with her free hand as the voice bounced around in her mind. Don’t listen to them! She squeezed the long shard of glass hard enough for it to cut into her skin. Fight, Addison!
A shiver raced up her spine as she took another step forward. Her leaden body was fighting her every move, almost as if the aliens were controlling her somehow. That is not possible, is it?
Her eyes searched for Marcus, finding her co-worker kneeling before two of the creatures with his fingers laced behind his head.
“I love the defiant ones,” the voice said, as an alien cocked its head at her while approaching.
She wanted to continue to move, but her body seemed to be rooted to the floor. Addison opened her mouth to cry out, but no sound came.
She looked at the alien in front of her more closely. It was slender and taller than she expected and stood at least a foot over her. Its blood-red eyes bore into her as its voice spoke within her mind again.
“Tell me, how many of you are there?” the alien asked.
His voice raced through her mind and her mouth opened, as if ready to tell him everything he asked. Addison tried clamping her mouth shut and gritted her teeth. I’m not telling him anything.
“Answer me!”
Coercion swept over her, but she maintained her silence. The longer she fought, the greater of a chance the kids and the others had to get away. Every second counted.
The alien reached out and touched her cheek, trailing his long, scaly finger down her face. Addison screamed as she lifted her arm and tried to jab the glass into the alien’s chest. He caught her wrist, wrenching it to the side, causing the glass to fall to the floor. She tried to tug her hand free of his grasp, but he held tight.
“It’s been a long time since I found someone so defiant,” he told her as he grasped her chin. “I shall enjoy breaking you.” He dug his fingers into her chin, causing her to close her eyes. Her jaw ached as he squeezed tighter and she tried to wrench free. “Tell me how many of you are there?”
She gathered spittle in her mouth and spat it at the alien. He flinched as it trickled down his face.
Gazing up at him defiantly, she noticed a lime green goo oozing from his chest. Is that blood? Yes, yes it is. This is the one I stabbed. Unfortunately, it didn’t appear to be fazing him at all. If a blade to the chest didn’t hurt them, what would?
Faster than she could see, his hand holding her chin whipped up and struck her. She toppled to the floor as pain sliced through her skull. Sticky warmth coated her cheek and her vision darkened. No. No. No. Don’t you dare black out!
“Stop! Please. I’ll tell you what you need to know. Just leave her alone, please!” Marcus pleaded, his voice sounding miles away even though she was sure he was still in the room with her.
“No,” she said, forcing her gaze to focus. She wobbled as she tried to sit up. The ground around her seemed to be vibrating. Everything was spinning. How hard had he hit her? She needed to focus and fast.
The alien turned, trudging away from her.
“Marcus, no,” she said her voice coming out weaker than she’d intended. Her arms trembled as she tried to get to her hands and knees to crawl across the floor toward him.
Marcus met her apprehensive eyes with his and shook his head at her. “I’m sorry, Addison. I can’t let them hurt you.”
“No…you…don’t understand,” she said, fighting for a breath and to stay conscious. Yet the more she moved, the worse her head hurt and the more her vision waned.
“Tell me. How many of you are there?” the alien asked Marcus.
“Twelve adults and sixty-two children,” his monotone voice echoed throughout the room.
“Very good.” The alien nodded at his men.
All the other aliens darted out the door while the lead creature glanced back at her, a wide smile on his face, his black teeth projecting his complacency. As he turned back to Marcus, he raised his hand and placed it on Marcus’ brow. Addison scrambled across the floor to help, but he seemed to be miles away even though she was sure it was just a few feet.
Marcus howled as a white light encompassed him. As the light permeated his body, it began to flake away, like leaves blowing in the wind.
“No! Stop!” she cried out. Her heart pounded as she pushed herself to stand. It was too late though; Marcus’ body was nothing more than a pile of white ash on the floor. She covered her mouth as tears welled in her eyes. The alien turned back to her, the wide smile still plastered on his face. He took a step toward her knowing his ensuing move.
Oh my God. I’m next.
