This is another beautifully written story by Nikki Lynn Barrett.  This is the first in a trilogy so be prepared.  Becca and Hunter’s story was a soulful accounting of two people that have seen tragedy, felt it and found a relationship despite it.  Nikki Lynn always brings characters that have depth and passion to them and she did it again with this story. 

I love that her stories have emotion and are not your stereotypical romance read.  There is a cliffhanger but it is well worth the wait!

This is a wonderfully unusual romance novel, with a little mystery/thriller on the side!

Becca and Hunter are the kind of couple you want to succeed. I was completely entranced as the two battled both the past and present, while fighting for their lives. The courage they give one another is endearing and I simply love Becca’s determination. I enjoyed watching this love blossom, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for them next.

This was my first novel by Barrett, and I like her writing style very much. Her characters are strong, relatable, and interesting. The background isn’t forced, and the story flows with ease. It’s obvious by depiction, character development, and setting that this author is an artist. I look forward to her next novel, as I’m intrigued and want answers!

She wondered why he would even bother locking them. The island was fairly isolated and she doubted anyone would try coming in. But with the boat incident, he seemed to be on his guard. Hunter had mentioned more than once today that he thought something was off. He acted a little paranoid. He took her hands in his and helped her climb to feet. He touched the side of her face. “You do look exhausted.” he said quietly. “What a day. If I hadn’t blacked out…”

“You can’t help that you fell overboard!” Why would he even feel guilty for that?

“I spaced out! I lost control and that’s when things went downhill!” Hunter protested. A muscle strained in his neck. He really seemed agitated about the whole ordeal. “I normally pay better attention to the weather, and failed to do that this time, too.”

Becca took his hands in hers, giving them a squeeze. She opened her mouth, hoping the words would come out this time. All that happened were a few squeaks. She stomped her foot in frustration.

Hunter pulled her in his arms again. She leaned against him and soaked in his warmth.

“Don’t try to force the words if they won’t come.” He pleaded softly. Hunter was one of the only people to be so patient with her. When this happened the first time, the only time it had lasted years, her grandparents had yelled, cursed, and belittled her for it. The therapists, doctors, teachers, everyone had made such a fuss about it. She ended up feeling less of herself when she really had been trying. Did they really think she wanted to be like that? To have a lack of communication? Nobody got it.

Except Hunter.

Tears sprung in her eyes at the memories and she held Hunter even closer. She was content there. She was so glad he came back this year. Despite the few years separation from her friend, she felt right at home with him.

At her sniffle, Hunter tipped her chin up. “You are crying! Aw Bec, why the tears?”

“I think my emotions are going haywire. I’m tired, so I’m a little weepy. I’m so glad you’re back this year.” When she finished signing, his lips curled up in a smile.

“ So am I.” He whispered softly. Something in his eyes resembled longing tugged at her. His hands were still touching her face. He inched closer and parted his lips. Without thinking, Becca reacted. They met midway, his lips crashing over hers. Her thoughts ran a million miles a minute. Did he start this? Or did she? What were they doing? No matter how much she wanted this, the last time they had an almost kiss, he disappeared.

It wasn’t about you, you know this!

It didn’t matter.

She uttered a sound when he deepened the kiss.

His kisses were passionate. So tender. Loving. Inquiring. He drew her closer, tightening his strong hold on her. He held on like he never wanted to let go. A sound escaped his lips, but he didn’t stop. Her heartbeat sped up. She placed a hand on Hunter’s shoulder, then slid it around his neck, running her fingers through his hair. She opened her eyes for a brief second and devoured the sight of Hunter. Then she closed them again, leaning into him. His tongue toyed with her, teasing playfully.

She let out a breath and covered her chest with her hand. She blinked. Hunter stared intently at her.

King is a hot and sexy man. Kimberly is drawn to King immediately. King is not a “nice” man but he is perfect for Kimberly. The chemistry between King and Kimberly is blistering. I respect King because he lets Kimberly figure things out herself without pushing.

I found this book well written with interesting and realistic characters. This author was very detailed and did not gloss much no matter how difficult the situation got. The ending leaves you hanging so I do wonder if there will be a sequel. Overall, this was an interesting read. This book is not your traditional romance novel.

 

 

I knew immediately that I’m not a member of the targeted audience, but that didn’t deter my interest.

This novel is mainly about a woman trying to come to grips with her past, her inability to see her self-destructive tendencies, and simply letting go. While there are some romantic scenes, the story line doesn’t support the act of calling this a romance.

The story uses a great deal of street slang, and a few references that some may find hard to understand, but it adds a certain roughness that makes the story more realistic. Williams’ has depicted addiction with precision and intelligence, giving the story more depth. The ending was a little cliché, but considering the characters, it fit. I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it.

Sam Compton is a hot and sexy man who seems to spend more time with Riley’s family than his own. Sam seems to have issue with his self-esteem, which is why after tinkering with his whiskey for years he still has not looked to sell it. Sam is a hardheaded man.

The chemistry between Riley and Sam is blistering. The sex scenes were scorching. These two make a great couple if they stop playing games with each other and keep putting all there cards on the table. It came across as unrealistic.

Just One Night is the third book in the Sex, Love & Stiletto series by Lauren Layne. While this book is part of a series, it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel. I found this book to be well written. This book was very slow to start but picked up as the book went along. The main and secondary characters were interesting. Overall, this was a great book. I will be keeping my eyes out for future books by Ms. Layne.

This was a wonderful read that embraced the historical lover in me brilliantly!

Once I started, I couldn’t put this down! The author has devised an intelligent story line that both infuriates and delights! Charlotte’s open mind and eagerness to grab life by the reins is refreshing. Her love of romantic novels and quest for true love sets her apart from society during the Regency.

Nathan’s wrathful reputation precedes him everywhere he goes, but he abhors his behavior and seeks refuge in the country often. His hermit-like tendencies do little to keep his secrets safe, though. The ruthless gossipers have already claimed him a merciless man with a powerful temper. After meeting Charlotte, however, he comes out of his shell, and tames the beast inside of him just to be close to her. I felt for this man as he fought his insecurities, and a malicious sister whose sole purpose was to gain a title.

The author does an excellent job of portraying this time in history beautifully. The arts, musicales, gambling, and drinking were placed in a believable manner. The characters were cleverly unorthodox, and the villains were made to hate! The hero and heroine are strong, stubborn, and easy to fall in love with. With a wonderful ending, I recommend this novel for anyone that loves historical romance!

Adam has had a hard life making decisions even at a young age that he should not have had too.  He meets Calista Martin along the way and takes her on this dangerous journey he takes.  The more time they spend together, they both fall for each other.  Adam’s daughter also loves Calista at first sight and refuses to release her hold on her.  Adam’s daughter, Anna has abilities that are unexplainable and she even at the tender age of 4 manages to help her father in his battle.  

While I found this book well written, I felt all the way through the book like I was missing something.  Almost like this is part of a series I am unaware of.  The main and secondary characters were interesting and realistic.  While this book is very slow to start if you stick with it, it will slowly draw you into the story and not let go until the very end of the book.  Overall, this was an interesting book.
