REVIEW!! The Monster Within (Mounting Darkness) by Lola Rayne (@RayneLola)

Excerpt from Amazon:

Sometimes the monster that haunted you as a child truly is real…

All it took was one phone call to bring Nicole Jones’s life crumbling down around her. Now a nightmare she thought she’d left in her past is back, and he’s not exactly bringing her candy and flowers. While fleeing, in a non-terrified fashion, she meets a menacing man in a dark alley. Then promptly passes out at his feet.

Gideon Evans hasn’t exactly been having the best run of luck, but all that changes when a buxom little blonde collapses right in front of him. Or at least he thinks it has. It doesn’t take him long to realize that bombshell is an appropriate description for more than just her looks. Now he’s facing several problems, including a surprising enemy, his own dark past, and a rather inconvenient case of lust.

Can they work together to battle the nightmare that’s chasing them? Or will they succumb to the monster within?

A friend of mine has opened my eyes to more authors and genres then I can ever begin to thank her for.  Insert gratuitous thank you to Jena here.  🙂

Anyway, when I discovered a story written by Lola Rayne I decided to give it a try.  WOW, was I blown away.  This is a story that got me hooked from the beginning.  I know what it is like to think that the past is dead and buried and to have it reach up and bitchslap you.  So, when that happened with Nicole, I was drawn into her life.

Gideon has a definite white knight syndrome and that is such a sexy trait in someone that has a little more to them.  When he realizes that Nicole is his mate, he will do anything for her and well, to her.  This is a great beginning to what I believe is going to be an amazing series!

A light came on in an upstairs window indicating someone was there. Elyse walked up the front steps and tried the handle, but it was locked. Just as she reached for the bell, the door flew open and a large, muscular figure appeared. The old screen door and the absence of lighting in the foyer concealed his face.

“Hi,” Elyse said. “I was driving by and wondered if you had any vacancies.”

“Here?”

“This is an inn, isn’t it?”

“It hasn’t been for over four years.” He turned on the porch light. “I thought everyone in this town knew that.”

His disheveled appearance made her think he wasn’t planning on entertaining visitors. His dark, thick hair looked as if he’d run his fingers through it causing it to stand on end. He hadn’t bothered to button his faded blue jeans or put on a shirt before coming downstairs. Elyse couldn’t help but notice how his well-defined abs disappeared into his waistband.

“I’m sorry.” She moved away from the entrance. “I’m intruding.”

“No.” He stepped out onto the porch in his bare feet. “I just didn’t expect anyone out here at this time of the night.”

“I drove from the city. I thought I might stay the night. I used to come here as a kid.” She looked past his shoulder into the foyer. She saw a fresh stack of wood in the corner and several cans of paint. “Are you renovating?”

“Trying to.” He nodded. “It’s a work in progress.”

She caught a wave of alcohol on his breath.

 “Are you just passing through?”

“I’m not sure. I just needed to get away and I remembered how perfect this place always was.”

“Yeah,” he looked over his shoulder. “Not so much anymore.”

“What happened?”

“My uncle owned the place, but he couldn’t keep up with the maintenance. He and my aunt retired and left it to me. It’s just been sitting vacant since then. It needed a ton of work. I didn’t realize how much until I actually started ripping things out.”

“How long have you been renovating?”

“A little over six months.”

“Well, thanks for your time. Maybe I’ll visit when you’re finished,” She smiled encouragement, but disappointment filled Elyse’s heart at the thought of not staying there. “Good luck with the renovations.”

When she turned to leave, he stopped her with a hand on her shoulder. “Wait.”

When she turned, his ice blue eyes held her gaze. The intensity there made her stomach flutter. It should have been a warning sign to run fast and far, but her body responded in other ways. The sensation he created from just one touch coursed through her system, landing straight between her legs.

Oh my…

“For the past few months I’ve been renovating the third floor. If I’m going to live here and run this place, I wanted my rooms to be done first before I started on the rest of the inn. There are two bedrooms up there; both have private bathrooms. You could stay if you want.”

“That’s very nice of you, but—”

“Your room has a lock.”

As if that would keep you out. You have the keys.

“I’m not ready to have guests yet, so I wouldn’t charge you.”

“I couldn’t, but thank you.”

“You drove all this way to Pleasure Inn. There isn’t another place for miles. Spend the night and then you can leave in the morning.”

She wasn’t familiar with the surrounding area and the drive had made her tired. What if she couldn’t find another place to spend the night?

“I don’t blame you for being cautious.” He shrugged. “You do what your gut tells you: but you’re more than welcome to stay here.”

She stared into his deep eyes for a few moments. She’d left the city to get away and forget about the disaster of a relationship with Phillip. She’d done nothing but work for years. She hadn’t been to a restaurant or on a vacation in months. She was too busy cooking for others. Would one night in a beautiful Victorian inn be so bad? How could it be, especially when the inn keeper looked like a goddamned Calvin Klein model?

“I’ll stay on one condition.”

“Sure.”

“You have to tell me your name.”

“Oh.” He ran his fingers through his hair and smiled for the first time since greeting her. “Forgive my manners. I’m Logan Cole.” He extended his hand to her.

“Nice to meet you, Logan,” She said properly as she shook his hand. “I’m Elyse Clapton.”

“Welcome to Pleasure Inn, Ms. Clapton.” He dipped his head as he held the door open for her. “Where all of your fantasies become reality.”

REVIEW!! Burning (Demon Legacy) by J.M. Gregoire (@PureTextuality)

Burning is a prequel to the Demon Legacy that J.M Gregoire is currently writing, and can’t wait to get my hands on the next one!

Lucas is your typical playboy vampire living in Venice.  Loving the ladies is a hard job, but someone has to do it, right?  All that changes on the day that he meets Natalia.  Have you ever met that one person that knocks your world off kilter?  Lucas has and the love that he feels for her is breathtaking.

Natalia is a records keeper for a coven and it is a job that she absolutely loves.  After spending time and getting to know Lucas, she realizes that she is right where she wants to be.  I am excited to see where this series goes and I would love to see more of Lucas.  That being said, I can’t help but feel that Michael is going to be a seriously badass character.  Let’s hope I am right and he is in the series somewhere!

BLOG TOUR STOP!! Dancing with Detective Danger by Lynn Crandall (@lcrandall246 @Crimson_Romance @TastyBookTours) #giveaway

Blurb:

Uncovering secrets and exposing truth are all in a day’s work for private investigator Sterling Aegar. But when her latest case threatens to reveal her own buried feelings for an old love, Sterling runs for cover.
A body in the bathtub and pleas from a jilted wife to find her wayward husband mean a welcome break from the usual humdrum cases Sterling and her sister, Lacey, are called to investigate. But when Sterling’s old flame, Detective Ben Kirby, walks into the murder scene, she feels her world spin out of control. Danger from thugs and murderers poses no greater threat than the peril she’d suffer if she lets daredevil Ben get too close.
Seeing Sterling for the first time in two years is for Ben like drinking in a healing tonic. He could never forget the way it felt to run his hands over her delicious curves or the way she touched his soul. She remains the one person who can make the emptiness in his gut go away. Finding the murderer is his job, but protecting Sterling from seriously dangerous people is his mission.
As the case unfolds, Sterling and Ben not only solve the murder and locate the missing husband, they confront secrets that set them each free from a painful past.

Excerpt:

Ben stood behind the richly embroidered drapes at the condo’s living room window and
discreetly watched Sterling walk to the car as he shuffled paperwork through his fingers. Her
petite frame, dressed in a slim gray suit, pulled his attention as though he had no control.

That’s the way it was with her. He hadn’t seen her for two years, but all during that time he’d
been unable to will her out of his thoughts for very long. Seeing her up close and feeling her
presence today had stirred up old feelings inside him. After they’d gotten together, the terrible
aloneness he’d grown to live with had vanished. It hadn’t mattered that before she’d come along
he’d had no one, no family, because she’d completely filled the emptiness in his gut. Then when
she left, he’d felt all the more alone for having known but lost her.

Sterling’s straight, chestnut-colored hair had grown longer, brushing gently against her slim
shoulders. He liked it. And the two years apart had worn beautifully on her fine-boned face. She
looked even lovelier than he remembered. In the brief moments he’d stood next to her, he’d
taken in everything: her shapely curves, her intense, blue-green eyes, her sensuously curved lips
the color of a rich Merlot wine.

Ben’s stomach tightened. It had to happen sooner or later, he thought to himself. Even though
Sterling had left his life, it seemed inevitable that they’d run into each other sometime while
working a case. He’d like to think it meant their destinies were intimately intertwined. That even
though their paths might occasionally diverge and meander, they were actually headed in the
same direction. She’d been emphatic at their breakup that there was no future for the two of
them—that they wanted different things in life—but he just didn’t believe it. He believed in
possibilities, and though in the interim he’d given Sterling her space, the hope remained strong in
him that eventually, along the way, they would come together again, perhaps even stronger than
before.

Ben watched Sterling drive away and couldn’t help himself. Was it too much to hope maybe
this time it could be different?

My Review:

This was a good story.  I was intrigued that it involved a private investigator who was working an infidelity case that exploded into so much more.  Sterling is a former cop and private investigator who works with her sister Lacey.  Lacey was widowed two years prior when her husband, Nicholas was killed in the line of duty.

While working the case the sisters discover a body and with that discovery, in walks Ben.  Ben had been engaged to Sterling two years ago and she had left him and the force after her brother in law’s death.  She felt like she couldn’t take the risk of losing him like she had lost Nick and her father.  I found this a little cowardly but I guess everyone handles grief in their own way.

This story took me everywhere in the case.  It involved murder, kidnapping, drug dealers and dirty cops.  I was expecting a twist with the bad guys and Lynn didn’t disappoint.  The only part of the story that I didn’t fully understand was the part with Nick and Lacey.  I liked the love conquers all but I felt like I was missing something.  Ben and Sterling make a strong, passionate couple and I love the fact that Ben continued to love her and even understood the way she thinks.

This is a good romantic suspense and I am anxious to discover more Lynn Crandall gems!

REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY!! Eternal Service by Regina Morris (@ReginaMorris) #giveaway

I was contacted by the author and asked to review this book.  I was not compensated for my honest review.

Wow.  I wasn’t sure how I was going to like this story in the beginning.  I was grabbed by the scruff of the neck and immersed in a vampire story that I have not run across before.  I am awed and captivated by the story that has been created.  I am amazed to see a new take on vampires and a version that has not been written to death.  Raymond is coven master of his family and works for the government.  He runs a highly secret organization called The Colony.  Their mission is to protect the government.

Alex is a career military woman who strives to recover from a brutal attack several years prior.  When she is vetted and offered the position of Director of the Colony, she knows that this is the promotion that she has been waiting for.  When she discovers that the people she will be working with are vampires, she is scared and hesitant.  After she gets to know Raymond, Sulie and the others she realizes that she has nothing to fear from them.  She also realizes that Raymond fits the man she has been dreaming of for years.  Finding love when she wasn’t expecting it gives her pause but Raymond was made for her.

When danger attacks on their own turf, these two take matters into their own hands and Alex shows Raymond what she is made of.  Most humans aren’t able to take down a vampire but Alex is not your everyday human.  Maybe that is why Raymond finds it so easy to love her.

This was a great story and I am anxious for the next story in this series.

COVER REVEAL AND GUEST POST! Eternal Service by Regina Morris (@ReginaMorris)

Eternal_Service_Cover_for_Kindle

Guest post by Author Regina Morris:

Vampires. Is there no greater (or sexier) hero out there? Shape-shifters do catch my eye, but for me, vampires are the sexiest heroes in paranormal romances. I’ve always preferred the lighthearted romances compared with the darker stories. Put a misunderstood, lonely vampire in a novel that doesn’t want romance, or doesn’t know he wants it, and introduce a love interest that steams up the page? Yep. That’s a good story!

There are so many vampire novels out there to read. For me, what makes each one unique is their individual worlds. Some authors have their vampires unable to be in sunlight, some authors have their vampires dead all day, while others, like me, prefer vampires around 24/7. It really is up to the author what vampire lore they want to keep for their stories. Plus, some authors throw in a twist to make their vampires even more unique. The vampires in my Colony series novels can alter their age based upon the blood they drink. A lot of blood daily, they’re young. Wean off of the blood, they can be old. This comes in handy when you live multiple lives as federal agents protecting the presidents of the United States over the last 150 years.

My novel Eternal Service is the first book in the Colony Series. This story follows the coven master, Raymond, who is a lonely individual with great responsibility. He has noble beliefs, but falls short. He’s a flawed character, and who doesn’t love that? His only friend is the token human of the group who is the human liaison between the team and the President. This human is retiring, thus the story introduces the love interest, Alexandra Brennan, who is the man’s replacement. Raymond secludes himself from interacting with humans, especially female humans, but he is drawn to Alexandra. Will his heart or is mission be compromised? Alexandra has a past that haunts her and she’s un-trusting of men. Will she follow her heart or her career? Together, can they save the President?

Book #2 of the Colony Series, United Service, will be available in the fall of 2013. It is the story of Raymond’s half-breed son Sterling. Sterling is a modern-day vampire who clashes with his father’s antiquated ideals. Being the half-breed of the group, Sterling knows he’s the team’s weakest link and he hates it. Sterling jumps at an opportunity to do some field work rescuing kidnapped vampire children and is accompanied by a nanny of one of the kidnapped children. The nanny, Kate, is a purebred vampire. Can Sterling put behind his philandering ways and woo the lovely Kate? Will Kate accept the advances of a half-breed? Can they save the children from a religious cult who wants to kill them?

Book #3 of the Colony Series is called Enduring Service and will be available in 2014. Sulie (Raymond’s sister) has been in love with the same human man for nearly thirty years, but refuses to allow herself the joy of true love because her love is unrequited by her human boss, Dixon. As Dixon’s retirement looms near, and his memory of Sulie and the last thirty years of his life is about to be erased, does she confront her fear of intimacy and take a leap of faith before it’s too late? Dixon has decided that it’s time to retire and enjoy what time he has left. When Sulie is kidnapped during a medical emergency, Dixon realizes that retirement means giving up everything, and everyone, he’s known for the last three decades. Will he risk his life, and his heart, to save her?

I’ve read many vampire romance novels and have discovered five critical elements that exist in the books that I love and read over and over again. When I began writing my novels I made sure that all of these elements made it into my books. First, I made my vampires not want for money. Who wants to read a story of a broke vampire who lives on the streets? I’d rather have them in a stately mansion that is exquisitely furnished. Secondly, the vampires are not loners. I wanted my vampires to work together in a group and have a close bond to one another. Third, I didn’t want blood to be an issue where they spend half the novel hunting humans. The Colony receives bagged blood from Uncle Sam. Fourth, I like when the vampires have a common enemy or goal. Lastly, I enjoy stories where there is some sort of ruling body governing the vampires. In my Colony series the Vampire Council arranges marriages, blood deliveries and much more for the vampires.

I have outlines for at least another three books in the Colony series and have outlined a YA mystery that I plan to release next year. If you visit my website (www.reginamorris.com) you can connect with me in various social medias.

Thank you, Regina!  I am so grateful to have you talk to us about your upcoming books!  Good Luck and come back and join us anytime!

BLOG TOUR STOP AND GIVEAWAY!! Secrets of the Sky by Jaye Shields (@jayeshields, @Crimson_Romance @TastyBookTours) #giveaway

Excerpt from Amazon:

Sparrow Reed might look like an angel, but she’s a witch with a back full of enchanted tattoos and she’s not afraid to use them. When her best friend’s life is threatened by an evil Goddess, Sparrow joins an epic battle against the demons sent to destroy her home. She never realized that the night she almost died, her life would truly begin.

Rowen Aerion of the Knights of the Fog was sent to the human realm to tip the balance in an unfair fight. But when he arrives on Alcatraz Island to aid the mortal humans, he sees an angel fighting demons. But she’s not an angel, she’s human. And according to a soothsayer, his love for her will mean her demise.

Sparrow is thrust into a world she never imagined existed, yet nothing thrills her like the handsome warrior who refuses her seduction. When Rowen’s rejection sends Sparrow into the arms of a dangerous rebel, Rowen must decide which is more dangerous, the oracle’s grim warning, or forsaking his heart’s sole desire.

I am a fan forever of Jaye Shields!!  I have to admit that I became intrigued with Rowen in Secrets of the Fog and had a feeling that Sky was going to be about him and Sparrow.  Thankfully, Jaye knew what I wanted and delivered!

Rowen is a Knight of the Fog and has never seen anyone that captivates him the way that Sparrow does.  I liked that the beginning of the book retold some of Secrets of the Fog from different perspectives.  It let me understand more of the characters and to form bonds with them.  Sparrow’s aunts are amazing witches and their infectious love of life leaps from the pages.  I had a feeling that Sparrow’s mom, Egret had more going for her then what we knew and I am so delighted that she was able to find her happy ending.  I was glad that Rowen took a chance and told Sparrow how he feels even after he was told the future involving death.

I want to know more about Pyrrhus.  The Quetzalem has a powerful ally in Sparrow, not to mention the High King and the Knights of the Fog.  I can’t wait to see his rescue and discover where Jaye takes these fabulous characters.

REVIEW!! Secrets of the Fog by Jaye Shields (@jayeshields, @TastyBookTours)

Excerpt from Amazon:

When the dryad Tera’s friends inform her that the portal on Alcatraz Island is buzzing with an arrival, she thinks her goddess mother has come to visit. When Tera arrives at the portal to welcome her, she doesn’t find her mother, she finds a gigantic otherworldly warrior causing mass destruction among the San Francisco tourists. Being a forest dryad born from the Goddess of the Hunt has its perks, and kicking ass is one of them.

Sabin is six-feet-six of hard-bodied soldier, used to subduing demons twice his size. One day after chasing an elusive smoke demon through a portal into the human realm, Sabin is brought to his knees by a beautiful woman, literally. After arriving at a pier full of dead bodies, Tera issues a passionate smack-down before Sabin can explain that he’s the good guy.

He’s just in time: an an ancient grudge has come to life. Eris, the Goddess of Chaos, has held a bitter hatred for Tera’s mother, Artemis, for over 400 years – and now she’s ready to destroy all dryads – including Tera.

REVIEW:

OMG!  How do you even begin to review a Jaye Shields book?  I am a fan for life and actually purchased this book for my own pleasure.  Shortly after, I was invited to do a blog tour for the release of Secrets of the Sky.

Tera is a dryad which are daughters of the Goddess of the Hunt, Artemis.  She has remained chaste and has developed fighting skills that honor her mother and keep her city safe.  Tera’s best friend is Sparrow, who is a sprite of a wiccan that can transform into birds.    Throw in some older auntie witches and I feel like a pina colada!

Tera goes to close a portal in the city and discovers a sexy, hulk of a man name Sabin wrecking havoc.  In the middle of this battle, she discovers that he is protecting her city and she reconsiders her opinion of him.  Sabin doesn’t know what to make of the dryad but he is intrigued.  As a Knight of the Fog, he has seen a lot of women but Tera is the first to touch his heart.

Jaye has managed to create a different view of the paranormal and I am awed by her incredible talent and skill to draw me in and keep me captivated!  Besides, any book that incorporates hot guys, battles, and coffee; well let’s just say it is permanently embedded in my kindle!

Join me on Monday, February 11th for my review on the 2nd book in this incredible series and a giveaway!!

Book Synopsis

High school senior Victoria “Tori” Reeve has it pretty good. She’s rich, she’s smart, and she’s popular. What more could a girl ask for? Sure, she’s a little lonely, what with being single and her best friend going off to college and all, but she’s got her work at the Spaulding Crisis Center to keep her busy. When she gets a new boss in the very easy on the eyes form of Isaac Larsen, suddenly her volunteer work feels a lot less like work. Even if he does seem to cause Tori to break out into spontaneous fits of foot in mouth disease. Somehow in spite of her blunderitis, Isaac still seems to be interested in her in a more-than-employer or even more-than-friends kind of way.

So really she should have known that things would go sideways.

Trouble comes to Spaulding, and that trouble seems to be centered on Tori and the Crisis Center. Is she really the focus? Or does this all have to do with the new mysterious man in her life? In her efforts to find out, Tori stumbles across some secrets. Skeletons that might have been better off left in the closet. As it turns out, Spaulding is a hot spot for bad blood…

I am in love with this book!!  Tori is one of those characters that you bond with at the beginning of the story and feel like you can reach in the book and shake some sense into her.  Isaac is an interesting character and I could not really get a read on him.  He just rubbed me the wrong way.  I don’t like possessive guys and he was just a tool.  Now, Drew on the other hand…

I have a weakness for guys like him and there were so many times I wanted to scream at Tori!!!  This was a new take on a vampire story and let me tell you that Ginny nailed it with this one!  SPOILER ALERT!

When it comes out that the MAIN reason that Isaac is into Tori is that she is a rare breed of human that can have a child with a vampire, I was going crazy! I knew there was something that I was missing! Drew is the perfect best friend and I can see a whole lot of growth in this relationship. I do think that Tori has her hands full with finding new friends since…you need to read the story for that part. Let’s just say keep your friends close and your enemies even closer.
