REVIEW BY BRANDY! MASTERED BY MAYA BANKS

What he wants, he takes with no remorse or guilt.

She stood out in his club like a gem, unspoiled and untouched. A lamb among wolves, she clearly didn’t belong. Drawn to her innocence he watched as she was surrounded by men who saw what he did—but no one but him could touch her. He summoned her to his private quarters. He sensed her fear. He also recognized the desire in her eyes. And he knew she wouldn’t leave before he possessed her. She had no need to know his secrets. Not until he had her under his complete and utter control.

What he wants, she isn’t sure she can give him.

The moment he told her want he wanted, she couldn’t resist. Instinct told her to run, but her heart said stay and walk the fine line between pleasure and pain. Though she wasn’t sure she could ever completely surrender, the primal part of her wanted to try, even knowing this man could break her in ways she never imagined. Because once he possessed her, he owned her and it would be too late to turn back. She can only pray that he doesn’t destroy her in the end.

Let me start out by saying that I love Maya Banks.  I really enjoyed the Slow Burn Novels and I love getting to read her new works.  That being said I was kind of disappointed in this story.  Evangeline was a hard character for me to connect with.  She was a bit to insecure and critical of herself.  I understand body issues or not liking yourself but she was a little more than that.

Drake.  I love stories with dominating men and submissive women.  The D/s lifestyle is one that I think gets twisted and abused in stories at times.  So, hear are a couple of my issues with the book.  Keep in mind, opinions are like assholes and everyone has them.  What doesn’t work for me might be the book that rocks your world.  To each his own.

First, no innocent is going to allow a stranger to call her into his office and go to work on her like Drake did.  Nope.  Not happening, especially one like Evangeline.  Second, hello secrets.  Drake just demands that she moves in and submits to him and she literally asks no questions?  Me on the other hand?  I need a background check, credit check, three personal references, DNA sample, lie detector test and a certified affidavit from his parents. Third, the way she allows him to treat her is just sad.  She was too innocent to allow Drake to have a stranger come in and have sex with her.  That is the type of thing that is discussed between two consenting adults beforehand not during.

Yes, I KNOW that it is all fiction but I was just disappointed in Evangeline’s character.  I don’t mind a submissive MC but I want a submissive who realizes that she has the power in the relationship.  I also know that a true D/s relationship is based on trust and that takes time to build.  These two never got to that point.

As this is a CLIFFHANGER, I will be anxiously awaiting Dominated to see if Drake has become more than the thug he seems and Evangeline can become more powerful than she appears.

Linda Goodnight’s Five Easy, Creative Ways to Give Money
Money and gift cards are popular gift choices for teens or older kids and, no doubt about it, they love them. Plus, they’re easy to give. But simply handing over cash or a card doesn’t feel “special” enough to me. So, every year I look for clever ways to give money or gift cards to the older kids on my list. Here are five I’ve used with good success:

1. Snow Globe Money. One year while out shopping, I found an inexpensive snow globe with a photo insert slot. Instead of the photo, I inserted a folded twenty-dollar bill. Globes are also available in various prices, sizes and shapes online such as these:
2. Framed! Purchase a picture frame of any size or price range. Depending on the child’s special interests, you might even choose a frame in his favorite color, decorated with sports emblems such as my red-and-white Oklahoma Sooners football frame, dance shoes, animals, special messages or whatever. Remove the back from the frame and insert the money or gift card, followed by a picture, a piece of shiny gift wrap or the printed background of your choice. You crafty folks will make origami or something creative with the bills. I just get them in there! Replace the back. Wrap or bag.
3. Tissue Box Money. This one works best for an older child with a sense of humor. My thirteen-year-old granddaughter loved it. Tape dollar bills end to end with a dab of tape. (You want to be able to remove the tape without tearing the money.) Roll the taped bills into a tube shape and insert into an empty Kleenex box leaving the edge of one bill poking out. Wrap or gift bag the box. The child will have fun pulling out the endless roll of “tissue” money.
4. Buy a Wallet. Or a cell phone holster, suitable to the recipient’s age and in whatever price range you want. This works especially well for those hard-to-buy-for teenage boys. Insert the gift card or money into the wallet and gift wrap.

5. Christmas Ornament Cash. Purchase a large, hollow transparent or clear globe ornament. Remove the top and fill the inside with bills of any denomination. Optionally, stuff in colored garland or tinsel along with a single bill. Write the person’s name on the ornament, and leave blank or decorate however you wish. Replace the top, add a hook hanger, wrap in tissue paper, box and gift wrap.
There you have them. Five easy ways to make money gifts extra special.
Christmas is just around the corner, and I am always in the market for new, easy ideas for gifting money or cards. Anyone have some to share?
Happy holidays,
Linda

REVIEW BY BRANDY! DARKEST BEFORE DAWN BY MAYA BANKS

The Kelly Group International (KGI): A super-elite, top secret, family-run business.
Qualifications: High intelligence, rock-hard body, military background.
Mission: Hostage/kidnap victim recovery. Intelligence gathering. Handling jobs the U.S. government can’t…

The enigmatic Hancock has been both opponent and ally to the KGI teams for as long as they’ve known him. Always working a deep game, Hancock’s true allegiance has never been apparent, but one thing is for certain—he never lets anything get in the way of duty.

But now, his absolute belief in the primacy of his ultimate goal is challenged by a captive he’s been ordered to guard, no matter how much she suffers in her prison. She’s the only woman who’s ever managed to penetrate the rigid walls surrounding his icy heart, but will he allow his perplexing feelings for the beautiful victim to destroy a mission he’s spent years working to complete or will he be forced to sacrifice her for “the greater good.”

I absolutely love Maya Banks.  That being said, I was expecting more from this book.
I clicked with Honor.  I understand the need to help those who can’t help themselves and her selflessness is inspiring.
Hancock.  I wanted to like him.  I really did but he just pissed me off and I couldn’t get passed the fact that he is a douche.
**SPOILER ALERT**
How the hell do you think it is okay to “rescue” someone and then turn them over to monsters?  The greater good?  That’s ridiculous.  Hancock goes into the Middle East to rescue Honor after she was the sole survivor of a terrorist attack.  The whole point of rescuing her was so she could be used as bait to try and bring down a bad guy cartel.  It just made him seem like an asshole because he seriously thought that sacrificing her for their mission was okay.
Honor was just as bad.  She was angry for a moment and then she accepted that this was the way it was going to be.  I have a problem with that.  She was stronger than that and her story should’ve reflected it.
I will continue to read Maya but I have to say that I wish this story would have been more.

Or will Raelyn allow her past to control her future, feeling the chance of another heartache is too great to bear? Goodreads TE_Teaser6_Sm     Exclusive Excerpt: Damien lightly laid me on the bed, removed my towel, and tucked me beneath the sheets. “Do you need anything? Water, saltines, anything?” Concern filled his features once again. “No.” I smiled. “I’m fine. Just tired.” He nodded his acknowledgment, and then he walked to the bathroom door while pulling his soaking wet shirt from his back. He tossed it on the chair, every muscle flexing with his movements. I might have been tired, but that didn’t stop me from being stunned into silence as my body flamed to life at the sight of his bare torso. My greedy eyes traveled from one end of his shoulder to the other, drinking in the beauty of his ink. Without glancing at me, he sauntered over to his dresser to pull out a dark-colored shirt. “Don’t,” I whispered, feeling my heart stop beating in my chest. It destroyed me a little every time he concealed this part of himself from me. I knew something awful had happened to Damien and that he didn’t want to talk about it, but him hiding it from me hurt beyond any other physical pain I’d ever experienced. His arms paused midair, and he gazed over his shoulder. From his side profile, I saw the instant his body tensed, and his jaw clenched. “Please…” I swallowed thickly and dug for courage. “You want me to stay. And I want to lie with you…with nothing between us.” I realized I was being unfair, but I was that desperate. A visible tremor shook through him. It felt as though an eternity had passed before he spoke, “Don’t touch them.” My heart swelled within its confined space. He was going to trust me. “I won’t,” I breathed in relief. “I promise.” “Don’t ever break a promise to me, Raelyn.” He slowly lowered his arms and pivoted to face me. “So, don’t make one if you can’t keep it.” “I keep my promises,” I vowed with the utmost sincerity. “As do I. Always.” His voice was reverent.     Alicia Rae Bio: 5889106Alicia Rae is a Contemporary Romance Author who lives in Dekalb, Illinois, with her husband and three beautiful boys. BLOG TOUR! WHEN A SCOT TIES THE KNOW BY TESSA DARE (@avonbooks)

About WHEN A SCOT TIES THE KNOT
On the cusp of her first London season, Miss Madeline Gracechurch was shy, pretty and talented with a drawing pencil, but hopelessly awkward with gentlemen. She was certain to be a dismal failure on the London marriage mart. So Maddie did what generations of shy, awkward young ladies have done: she invented a sweetheart.

A Scottish sweetheart. One who was handsome and honorable and devoted to her, but conveniently never around. Maddie poured her heart into writing the imaginary Captain MacKenzie letter after letter … and by pretending to be devastated when he was (not really) killed in battle, she managed to avoid the pressures of London society entirely.

Until years later, when this kilted Highland lover of her imaginings shows up in the flesh.  The real Captain Logan MacKenzie arrives on her doorstep—handsome as anything, but not entirely honorable. He’s wounded, jaded, in possession of her letters… and ready to make good on every promise Maddie never expected to keep.

About TESSA DARE
Tessa Dare is the New York Times bestselling, award-winning author of more than a dozen historical romances. A librarian by training and a book-lover at heart, Tessa lives in Southern California with her husband, their two children, and a big brown dog.
Quotes
“Dare’s marvelous third Castles Ever After Regency romance (after Say Yes to the Marquess) builds a gradual, intense romance between two people who are determined to avoid love and commitment….Dare’s swiftly moving plot is enhanced by the seamlessly developed romance, and the sensuality is heightened by the slow awakening of the pair’s mutual attraction.”Publishers Weekly, **STARRED**
“With sharp, clever banter, breathtaking sensuality, colorful descriptions, and solid cultural detail, this compelling, often hilarious escapade puts a refreshing spin on the [‘imaginary lover’ theme and adds another winner to Dare’s riveting ‘Castles’ series.”Library Journal, **STARRED**

“Dare’s latest begins with a fairy-tale twist of fate, then leads readers on a mesmerizing and intense emotional journey that explores love in many forms and the powerful pull of dreams.” Kirkus, **STARRED**
“Dare delights with another marvelously romantic story that delivers a deep sigh, a tear and a smile. With her painfully shy heroine and vulnerable hero, readers are immediately captivated and will savor the joy of this imaginary-sweetheart plotline. You’ll stay up all night to reach the unforgettable ending.” RT Book Reviews, **4.5 Stars, Top Pick!**
Excerpt:

September 21, 1808
Dear Captain Logan MacKenzie,
There is but one consolation in writing this absurd letter. And that is that you, my dear delusion, do not exist to read it.
But I run ahead of myself. Introductions first.
I am Madeline Eloise Gracechurch. The great- est ninny to ever draw breath in England. This will come as a shock, I fear, but you fell deeply in love with me when we did not cross paths in Brighton. And now we are engaged.

Maddie could not remember the first time she’d held a drawing pencil. She only knew she could not recall a time she’d been without one.
In fact, she usually carried two or three. She kept them tucked in her apron pockets and speared in her upswept dark hair, and sometimes—when she needed all her limbs for climbing a tree or vaulting a fence rail—clenched in her teeth.
And she wore them down to nubs. She sketched songbirds when she was supposed to be minding her lessons, and she sketched church mice when she was meant to be at prayer. When she had time to ramble out of doors, anything in Nature was fair game—from the shoots of clover between her toes to any cloud that meandered overhead.
She loved to draw anything.
Well, almost anything.
She hated drawing attention to herself.
And thus, at sixteen years old, she found herself

staring down her first London season with approxi- mately as much joy as one might anticipate a dose of purgative.
After many years as a widower, Papa had taken a new wife. One a mere eight years older than Maddie herself. Anne was cheerful, elegant, lively. Every- thing her new stepdaughter was not.
Oh, to be Cinderella in all her soot-smeared, rag-clad misery. Maddie would have been thrilled
to have a wicked stepmother lock her in the tower while everyone else went to the ball. Instead, she was stuck with a very different sort of stepmother— one eager to dress her in silks, send her to dances, and thrust her into the arms of an unsuspecting prince.
Figuratively, of course.
At best, Maddie was expected to fetch a third son with aspirations to the Church, or perhaps an insol- vent baronet.
At worst . . .
Maddie didn’t do well in crowds. More to the point, she didn’t do anything in crowds. In any large gathering—be it a market, a theater, a ballroom— she had a tendency to freeze, almost literally. An arctic sense of terror took hold of her, and the crush of bodies rendered her solid and stupid as a block of ice.
The mere thought of a London season made her shudder.
And yet, she had no choice.
While Papa and Anne (she could not bring her- self to address a twenty-four-year-old as Mama) en- joyed their honeymoon, Maddie was sent to a ladies’ rooming house in Brighton. The sea air and society were meant to coax her out of her shell before her season commenced.
It didn’t quite work that way.

REVIEW BY BRANDY! SUSTAINED BY EMMA CHASE

Blurb:
Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled series, returns with a brand new funny, romantic, sexy story!

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy and Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that—that, I know how to do.

I absolutely loved this book!  I don’t normally enjoy books written from a man’s perspective but I loved Jake.

Jake loves his life.  He has a clear cut path and doesn’t expect any kind of deviation from it.  He keeps it simple and matter of fact.  He deals with clients that expect a man to get the job done and besides the obvious morons that keep repeating the same stupid mistakes, he does it well.  So you can imagine his surprise when he runs into a boy that is so much like him at that age it is unreal.

Chelsea McQuaid is a young woman that has her hands for.  At twenty-six she has taken guardianship of her six, count them six, nieces and nephews.  The kids all range from six months to fourteen years and while they are good kids, they still have some mischief up their sleeves.  This poor woman just longs for a little adult conversation but Jake has other ideas.  She makes it clear that she is a package deal and while Jake thinks he can handle it, he has no idea what to expect.

Picture it:  One hot, sexy lawyer + one innocent aunt + six devils in disguise = a book that I can not say enough good things about.

If you like books that make your heart flutter, your smile grow brighter and the laughter coming, then this is the book for you.

PS:  It would be wonderful if we could all take a page out of the Judge’s book and change the life of a child.
